v. 4-And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. Many render this scripture as ‘yet-to-be fulfilled.’ However, a careful review of the context puts it clearly at the time of Christ’s first coming, following His sacrificial death, Zechariah 13:7. The Spirit declared, ‘the day of the LORD cometh,’ and describes it as a victory won, and the spoils divided, which is again a reference to what Christ would accomplish by His death, Isaiah 53:12. In this context then, Christ’s feet did stand IN THAT DAY on the Mount of Olives, and in the figurative language of scripture in Isaiah 40:4- “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.” Christ having removed every obstacle to the salvation of God the Father’s elect, the way of salvation was opened up, and the redeemed delivered from certain and eternal condemnation, walked to the top of the mount of Olives and ascended victoriously into glory, Ac. 1:9-12.

v. 5- And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. Following our Lord’s ascension from the Mount of Olives, days of affliction and persecution were to be expected at the hands of the Roman government and the destruction of the temple. However, the LORD would intervene miraculously as before in the days of Uzziah and provide a way of escaped for His remnant of grace. Such times are depicted by our LORD in Luke 21:20.
