A Thought From the Word

And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” I Samuel 25:40, 41

If David here is a type of the son of David, Jesus the Messiah, then Abigail is a type of the bride of Christ, those whom Christ purchased for Himself with His blood. We all know that humility is a chief virtue and that a sense of our unworthiness of God's favor is healthy for our souls. But, sometimes we need to have a fresh vision and appreciation for it. We get that here with Abigail.

She had had the unhappy lot of being the wife of Nabal, whose name means “fool”. He fit his name and was a first-class scoundrel. In God's providence, He took Nabal's life from him, leaving Abigail as a widow. But David admired this woman and wanted her for his own. Abigail was moved at this request, seeing herself as wholly unworthy to be the wife of David.

Now, David had his faults we all know. There were many of them. But, believer, Jesus has no faults. He is the pure, spotless Son of God. He is the majestic King of heaven and earth. And, He desired to have a bride. He desired you! This desire turned to action when He sacrificed His own life to remove all the ugliness of your sin and to give you the beauty of His perfect righteousness.

How can our response towards Him be anything less than Abigail's towards David? May we see today how genuinely unworthy we are to be loved and desired by Jesus Christ. This coming Lord's Day when we go to worship, may we say, “Who am I to have the blood-bought privilege to come into God's presence?” When we serve God's people, even when they are hard to deal with, may we remind ourselves, “It is a high honor for me to even be counted among the people of God.” When we sacrifically labor and give to God's kingdom may we consider it a privilege.
