The Believer's Perfection

“For by one offering he has perfected forever those that are sanctified,” Hebrews 10:14

There are many false preachers who are deluding their hearers and followers into believing that they have the ability to better themselves, and even attain perfection by their will, determination and efforts. This is not a new message. It goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden with Satan himself, deceiving Adam and Eve into thinking that if they just acted according to their will, contrary to God’s Word, they would be as God! Even after their fall, rather than own their sinfulness, their fallen nature led them to try to recover from the Fall, covering their nakedness with fig leaves- Genesis 3.

The apostle Paul declared these inspired words, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain,” Galatians 1:21. Had Adam and Eve been able to recover from the fall by their efforts, God would not have killed innocent victims and clothed them with their skins, Genesis 3:21. Had Cain been able to satisfy God with the best his hands were able to offer, God would not have rejected his offering, or required the shedding of innocent blood instead, as a picture of what His Son would accomplish millenniums later by His death at the cross, Genesis 4. We must not believe for an instant that there is any perfection in us! “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is NOT in us,” 1 John 1:8. Perfection must then be found outside of us, and it is! The Scriptures declare that by the one offering God HAS PERFECTED forever those that HE sanctified (set apart in Christ in election, redemption, and regeneration). This is the particular grace of God to cause any sinner to own his/her sin, and to know that in this “flesh dwelleth NO GOOD THING,” Romans 7:18. It is the grace of God to give His children eyes to look by faith to Christ who fulfilled all that God’s law and justice required both in His perfect obedience to the precepts of God’s law, but in paying its penalty. So complete was His work of righteousness that He established and earned, that upon completion of His death, God the Father justified once for all, every sinner for whom He paid the debt.

What a comfort to God’s true children that when the Spirit of God makes us feel the weight of our sin, we are also made to see the preciousness of the blood that His Son shed, and whereby we are accepted in the Beloved, Eph. 1:6. As one dear saint of old declared, “The believer's perfection is in Christ. Oh that He may condescend to teach me, and lead me to look straight out of self—to a glorious Christ!” What others have as their goal, we as the LORD’S redeemed ones have as a reality already. We dare not look within ourselves, nor even to the graces of the Spirit as our perfection. We look to the LORD Jesus Christ alone and believe the report of His Word- “And ye are complete in Him." Colossians 2:10.
