For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up…” The earthly house, the temple, in all of its magnificence was but a blue print of the spiritual house of the Father, His Son, and all of the living precious stones, made up of elect, chosen sinners from every age, time, and place, for whom Christ came and earned and established a righteousness for them, and on whom they are laid as their one true foundation, and Chief cornerstone- 1 Corinthians 3:11, Ephesians 2:19, 20. When our Lord Jesus entered into the earthly temple, His zeal (ardor or jealous disposition) was manifest in his indignation against those that made it a house of merchandise. Like so many today, they made merchandise of what was a type of the pure, unadulterated Gospel of Christ, and His redeeming work for sinners, having perverted it to their own ruin, Galatians 1:6-12. The zeal of Christ for His Father’s spiritual house inflamed him and caused him to drive out the buyers and sellers in it, as was accomplished in John 2:14. It is that same zeal for the salvation of his people that drove our LORD unwaveringly to the cross to pay the sin debt for His people, fulfilling every requirement as their Surety, doing the will of the Father that sent Him. The ardent jealousy was for the glory of the Father who gave Him the sinners He should redeem and justify by His obedience unto death.
