A Thought From the Word

"...that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things." Titus 2:10

If the decorating in our home were left up to me, things would be pretty bad. Color coordination would be off, picture frames and mirrors would probably be crooked. Just because I can't decorate doesn't mean I don't appreciate those who can, like my wife. There is something about good décor that can make a home appear warm and inviting.

Far more important than pictures hanging in the right place, however, is a life that adorns the doctrine of God our Savior. In this context, Paul had been instructing Titus about practical Christianity lived out in relationships, the church, home, and in this immediate context, the service of servants to their masters. The instruction was given and then this motivating truth: the way we live should reflect well on the gospel of God our Savior.

What better teaching is there than that of a glorious Savior of sinners? For those who believe and rejoice in this gospel, are our hearts, words, and actions beautifying these truths or reflecting badly upon them? An unbeliever should be able to look at us and say, "What they believe may be crazy, but you can't deny their honesty and diligence at work, love in their families and the purity of their lives." While we all experience our sins and flaws displayed sometimes even before unbelievers, ours should be a life of continual repentance, striving to rejoice in Christ and reflect His grace in our lives.
