June 7 - Thailand

Today we spent the day traveling from Khoalak to Hat Yai. It was a 6 hour trip through mountain areas and open plains. The mountains are different here. They are not as long, but jut up from the earth and are covered with trees. The roads here are excellent. Since there are no extreme changes in temperature, there are no road repairs needed! A lot different than Wisconsin! They drive on the left side of the road here and there are motorbikes everywhere! The country of Thailand is ruled by a king. He himself was born in Massachusettes and came into power in his teens. We are very fortunate to be here when there is a celebration of his 60 years of rule, a rare thing. Many of the roadways in the towns are lined with flags of the king and of the country of Thailand. He has been a good ruler and has been good to his subjects. In the area where the tsunami struck is where we are staying (Khoalak). There is a tremendous amount of reconstruction still going on a year and a half later. The building where we are staying is new. The materials used are more modern, giving the appearance of newness all around. We have seen some large boats that were swept inland and not removed. We hope to go to a tsunami memorial before we leave. We had the first meeting of Youth EE this evening. The second session will be tomorrow night. The team is doing the fast-track version of Youth EE, which has never been done before overseas. The team is doing well. All are in good health. The weather has been superb! Hardly any rain considering this is the start of the rainy season here. It has just been HOT overall. We are sleeping in a dorm in air conditioning tonight, a real treat! Hot showers too! Thank you all for your continued diligence to prayer for the team.
