“Your Heart Has You Lifted Up” (2 Kings 14:1-29)

He killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela by war, and called its name Joktheel to this day. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face one another in battle.” And Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife’; and a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. You have indeed defeated Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Glory in that, and stay at home; for why should you meddle with trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?” But Amaziah would not heed. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went out; so he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent. (vs7-12)

Do not boast of your strength or say what you shall do, but confidently trust the Lord and not yourself. We can hope in His word, fully, but do not boast about how great you are or what you can do. Many are proud while putting on their armor, only to weep while taking it off (1 Kings 20:11). Preachers often ascend pulpit steps with giddy self-confidence, only to come down licking their wounds. I want to think NOTHING of myself and everything of Him. We can do nothing apart from Christ, and we can do all things spiritual through His strength (John 15:5; Phil 4:11-13). It is both: absolute weakness in self and all sufficiency in Him, both sinfulness in self and grace in Him, both nothing in self and possessing all in Him.

Don't boast because you overcame sin in the past, as if tomorrow will be the same, but LEAN on Him always, and He will save you. You will never trust Him in vain, but we will regret looking to ourselves because all who think they can stand will fall. Paul said, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor 10:12). King Amaziah had success, so he got went war needlessly, self-confidently, and he fell. Let us never look in the mirror and be so bold as to say, “Today, I will get my will done. I will go, buy and sale, and things will happen as I determine them”. James 4:13-16, says, “Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit'; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.' But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.” You are not in control of your life, and we must learn this eventually. Self-confidence is the absence of faith. Do not be doubtful or fearful, but put ALL of your hope in the WRITTEN word of God. He will do what He says, and He will save according to promise.

Finally, the Lord is the reason that we are saved from our sins. It is not because we are good, but because He promised to show us mercy by Jesus Christ who bore our sins away. He says, “For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel. And the Lord did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash” (vs26-27). He saves because of His love, His power, and His own blood to pay for our sins. Do not think, “I have joy, peace, health”, or anything, “because I'm good, special, and worthy”. No, God is good to you.
