“For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” Colossians 1:19
As we approach the Lord’s Table tomorrow, it is only right that we turn our thoughts and affections to Him. The Scottish Communion Season, which has been a sort of guide for our devotional thoughts this week, consists of a thorough spiritual preparation for receiving the Lord’s Supper. Part of that preparation is confession of sin to humble us on Thursday, examination of spiritual fruits to encourage on Friday, and meditation on the person of Christ on Saturday. There is a “fullness” in Jesus. The “fullness of God was pleased to dwell” in Jesus. We love to ponder the man, Christ Jesus, because the substance of deity belongs to Him. The kindness, the mercy, the purity, all the attributes of God find their burning focus in Jesus. He is the Son of God, and He has been His Father’s Son from all eternity. Whatever characteristics belong to the Father, belong to the Son. Because the fullness of God dwells in Him, He is all of grace. As John says in his Gospel account, “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (John 1:16) Jesus loves to bless His people, despite their spiritual deformity. Jesus is the Bread of Life, and as such He assures that “whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35) May we this day draw near to the Savior and be “filled in him.” (Colossians 2:10)
