Facts About TV Fundraising

If they're not selling products, they're trying to get you to help the children. What I've learned about TV preachers and their fundraising needs to be known more widely.

Have you ever read the fine print at the end of the broadcasts? After their half-hour or hour long appeal for you to help the starving children of the world, TV preachers always flash in small print the same basic message. They say something like: After sufficient funds are raised for the project mentioned in this program, the rest of the money is spent on equally worthy projects. In other words, a small amount is set aside for the project, and the rest goes to buy television air time. For any television ministry, the expense of air time will dwarf any other allocation.

You may not know this, but some ministries have been caught doing it. The preacher will write a book. The ministry will buy the book in bulk. (The preacher then gets royalties on the sales.) Then, the preacher will sell the book through his program. Don't believe me, check it out on the web.

In my research on Word of Faith, I noticed how similar all the monthly "partner" letters (everyone is a "partner" in the Word of Faith world, even though the relationship between ministry and donor is more like that of the spider and the fly) were that I got. No matter what ministry it was, the solicitations for money were more alike than different. That's because they all subcontract the fund raising out! The preacher's personal letter of concern for you was written by someone who has honed the art of emptying your pockets to a science.

I don't think Charles Spurgeon ever did any of this stuff.
