In the fire of affliction, God has our attention
1Peter 4:1 … he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin. How true! Of course, there is no true victory over the least sin, apart from regeneration or union with Christ whereby the old sinful self is uprooted, but nevertheless what purifying benefits come from suffering and affliction for the Christian. The pruning shears do quite a job with the unfruitful substance. God’s vice squeezes out excess. His sandpaper takes off that corruption. When we are doing fine we are just too cocky, too loose, too distracted, too sensual. But in the fire, all we can think about is God. Nothing else even matters – not the news, not the weather, nothing. He has our attention and we realize again that He is all we have on earth or heaven. Family, friends, food, fun, no, ultimately it’s “Christ is all”, Col. 3.11, and it is Him “with whom we have to do”, Heb. 4.13. And that is reality. - Bob Jennings
