Mel or Christ: Which Passion is Biblical?

Mel's movie is making the rounds again. It is a shocking movie that moves the bowels of the most faithful to anguish and grief. It is such a powerful movie that the God-ordained means of conversion and conviction--preaching--is rated second-place (Rom. 10:12ff.):

“This film is equal to ‘a lifetime of sermons’” (Billy Graham, People, March 8, 2004).

Not only that, but the centuries of teaching and preaching by faithful men called of God pale in comparison to the work of one Roman Catholic devotee:

“In the church we’ve tried for a long time with words to bring into consciousness the reality of what Jesus went through. We have waxed eloquent in our sermons, but this film brings that reality to us in one sitting.” (Chuck Smith, Jr., “Pastor’s Panel”, www.worshipleader.com).

Thus, the foolishness of preaching has become foolish indeed--even in the Church of God! Contrary to such worldly thinking, the Bible centers our faith not in our physical eyes that easily excite our emotions, but in the power of Christ preached (1 Cor. 1:21); Christ declares that His words are spirit and life!
