“More Abundantly” (John 10:1-42)

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (vs10)

Jesus came to give us life, the abundant eternal life of serving God in the salvation of others. This is the life that He lived, a life laid down, a life devoted to others, and we enter this life when we follow Him. We are sheep, appointed to hear His voice by the Father, and we yield Christ our full submission. We are not rebellious, but we believe that Jesus is the Door and the Shepherd - the One who saves and leads. He is our Shepherd particularly, and it shows by how we live. He says, “But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out” (vs2-3).

Abundant life is living for other’s salvation in the confidence that God’s elect will enter in. He says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but eh sheep did not hear them”, and, “other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd” (vs8, 16). We are not discouraged beyond measure, but ENCOURAGED in God’s infallibility. We rest our souls upon Him, and we lay our lives down in the assurance that it isn’t in vain. Abundant life isn’t selfish but giving; it isn’t living for our wills but His, and every one of His people has it. He says, “the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice” (vs3-4).

Are you a sheep? Then you hear His voice and follow Him. Do not be discouraged by other’s unbelief because not everyone will be saved, only EVERY ONE that God’s appointed. He says, “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own” (vs14). Do not be discouraged if many reject you. He will take the same gospel and make Himself beautiful to woeful sinners. We hear His voice because He’s what we need, the Only Savior there is. He says, “As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep” (vs13). There is no one else who laid down His life down as an all-sufficient ransom. He alone assuredly saves by doing EVERYTHING that we need

Yes, many don’t believe, but God gives eternal life to the predetermined. They will not perish, your work is not in vain, and abundant life is following Him in confidence! If you’re about His business, then the Spirit fulfills you inwardly. You’re rejected by men but always winning because your life is devoted to God’s people. You give, serve, and attend public meetings. You live and work with one thing in mind: God’s elect will be saved, and I give my life, willingly, to the task. Christ said, “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father” (vs17-18).
