There are many today who boast of having the Holy Spirit because of certain experiences they have had, and encourage others to seek. Two things are certain. First, any spirit that does not act in accord with how our Lord Jesus lived and died, is NOT the Spirit of God, but another, 2 Corinthians 11:4. Second, any spirit that draws attention to himself, his supposed fruits and graces, is NOT the Spirit of God.
The LORD Jesus Christ Himself said that the blessed Holy Spirit of God has but ONE delightful part, and that is to glorify Christ alone. As the LORD has been my teacher, and ever since He first opened my heart to Christ, no matter where I may look throughout the Holy inspired Word, it is of the LORD Jesus alone of whom the Spirit, the Divine Author, has spoken, and not of Himself, Heb. 1:1.
This is the one golden standard by which we are to determine whether a preacher is sent of God or not. It is what sets apart the true from the false. For, if God the Holy Spirit, in his glorifying the Lord Jesus, is never found to be speaking but of HIM, then truly all his faithful servants, who act by his authority, and are commissioned and ordained by him to the work, will never preach themselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, 1 Corinthians 2:2, 4:5.
If the Spirit of God has so testified in our heart the glory of the LORD Jesus, by His saving grace, regenerating life, and illuminating work, how sweetly and affectionately does He continue to draw these hearts away from ourselves to HIM, away from any thought of righteousness in us, to His righteousness alone imputed at Calvary, away from any glory in us, to HIS glory alone.
