“Went and Washed, and Came Back Seeing” (John 9:1-7)

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. (vs1-7)

If we do what Christ says, then we’ll experience His power. He came into this world to bear the curse, remove the stain of sin, and we trust His message. He spat upon the ground to heal this man, which represents the curse. He died for us, so that sin-defiled people may receive something greater than the life we lost in Adam (Gen 2:7). We came from the dirt originally, but now He’s born the curse, and we’re something greater, new creations who will live forever!

The gospel comes with power, not because you feel it, but because it is TRUTH, which tells us all to wash, immediately, according to the scriptures. We have a holy religion of cleansing by faith. Peter says, “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart” (1 Pet 1:22). God comes to us promising change, and we believe the commandment, and taste for ourselves that He is good (1 Pet 2:1-3). Do not linger, waiting for more than His command. He gives sight, power, and peace to all who trust Him, doing as He says. He is our key that unlocks all of God’s treasure, so that we RECEIVE goodness because God is just to give it through Christ. He’s done so much that we only believe, adding nothing.

We are rebuked, but not to damnation... reproved, but unto life. I’m not a sinner because He promised to damn me: we go through everything on earth because He’s promised to save. He said, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him”: that’s why he was born blind! God never looked upon us as perishing, but He foresaw Jesus saving us to God’s glory, in a way that exalts holiness by faith. Believe, go and do what He says, and you’ll see for yourself that He is powerful. We must suffer for the gospel, but everyone who’s seen the Son worships Him in obedience.
