“Eternal Life” (1 John 2:25)

“And this is the promise that He has promised us – eternal life.”

Jesus promises us eternal life in the gospel, and He makes it worth persevering and fighting against sin. We mature, growing spiritually from babes who know forgiveness and access into mature fathers who know Christ Himself, the Savior, by reliance and imitation. The gospel promises us a reward GREATER than earth’s passing treasures, things that are lusts and distractions. We war, fighting off the darkness of unbelief, relying on blood atonement and confessing God’s power to cleanse. We are transformed for battle, wrestling not against flesh and blood, overcoming as young men through the scriptures, agreeing with God, and submitting to His power (vs12-140. We are blessed to walk in the light, to know Christ by Holy Spirit power, and to be inwardly taught by God’s grace and separated from the perishing. He says, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (vs20). He’s revealed eternal life to us, and we believe it, being convinced. Peter said, “we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:69).

We know that Jesus is the Christ, and this keeps us near to Him. We believe this world is short lived, but another world is coming where peace, love, and ease of worship will be known - no more struggling uphill – and we wait for our reward, the Paradise of heaven. We are fixed to Christ by the PROMISE. He didn’t come and say, “Die for Me, and I’ll give you an earthly kingdom”, but He has promised eternal life, and this makes the battle worth it, makes us persevere, and it gives immense comfort and joy to know that while the world will be suffering, we’re saved, and while others are losing their souls for temporary pleasure, we’re fighting to win.

The promise, like Abraham and Israel had, is the Promise of the Lord Jesus and all that’s in Him - all that He is and gives us. It is the only thing worth living for and the Object of all holy affection. Live for this message, teach it to others, and secure yourself. Eternal life is the reward.
