“Whom Those Believing in Him Would Receive” (John 7:37-39)

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

We get the Spirit because Jesus is risen from the dead. We never earn Him or deserve His mercy. He is given to faith. We come to God with the Lamb that He’s already exalted, the One who finished the work and makes atonement, and we get the Spirit’s power, not because we’re better than anyone else, but because the Son ascended on high, and we trust Him to be why God saves. Death could not hold Him. Acts 2:24 says, “Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.” He took the sins of God’s elect to be His own, redeemed us, and appeased God’s anger in His blood. The Spirit comes because Christ is exalted to give Him to EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES (Acts 2:32-39). It is not about our power, but His, and we receive the Spirit by BELIEVING that Christ has done enough for POOR and thirsty sinners to take what we need.

I need obedience, love, peace, and perseverance, and these are the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23). I need boldness, courage, and hope, and the Spirit gives these by faith. What do you need from God? What is promised? Every spiritual blessing is for you, even all that you need to be godly (2 Pet 1:2-4).

Do not neglect Christ to get the Spirit, making up rules, and vain steps! Believe only, add nothing to faith, and go your way believing the Spirit is YOURS before you feel Him (John 4:46-53). Don’t wait on experiences or emotions. Jesus has given sufficient evidence, rising from the dead and saving many. He fulfills the Scriptures, and He honored God. TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD. Believe the Spirit is yours because of Christ.
