“The Blackness of Darkness Forever” (2 Pet 2:11-3:18)

“These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever” (vs17).

Destruction is reserved for false prophets. They serve themselves and shall perish in their corruption, turning grace into a license to sin and denying the Lord’s dominion. Peter says, “But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption”. Like Balaam, they love sin’s please, and they speak truth while following evil. Yet, their damnation teaches us repentance and being sure of their doom we turn to Christ for deliverance. Like Noah, we are warned and spend our lives in reverent obedience. We trust Christ’s for holiness. We don’t hope in phony forgiveness, but we believe the grace changes us. False prophets are sin’s slaves, so find someone preaching holiness by grace according to the scriptures. Find a preacher who trusts God to live godly because false prophets shall not escape, neither shall their hearers.

Secondly, God restrains His judgment until His elect are saved (2 Pet 3:1-9). He says, “But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance”. He has predetermined who’d enter heaven, and He waits, generation after generation, until they are all enlightened, and then He’ll come. This world continues because God is on schedule, and He has more, who like Noah, must enter in. Be patient. Two thousand years have passed since the resurrection, but to Him that is nothing. Do not let the mockery of sinners disturb you, “knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation’. The Flood was no lie, so Noah labored, even unto holiness. He preached, and few were saved, but we do the exact same thing. We live so that others know the gospel, making sure of our own behavior. God is going to destroy the world, so prepare for it “in holy conduct and godliness”.

Finally, our job is clear: grow in grace and knowledge, not the superficial head knowledge, but the knowledge that changes us into obedient children. We read, “You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever”. Give all diligence to walk acceptably to Him. God’s grace is the hope against damnation, and spiritual knowledge of Christ’s riches produces Christ-like people. Keep your mind upon Him, and learn that He gives holiness, diligence, and heaven. He is the One to focus on. The gospel will never turn you from Christ to yourself, and the more you learn of Him, the more fruit He produces in you.

Years ago, I read a book on the attributes of God, and the author labored to show in the first section of every chapter that we must live the gospel out. I’m quite certain this is what Peter means. Grow in grace to conquer your sins, and grow in knowledge of His power, instead of your own, and learn the benefits of trusting what He did to appease God. Godliness can only come by grace, so focus upon Him continually! Do not twist the scriptures to preach anything else.

We’ve all seen people start so strong and end so shamefully. Press on until the end. Make ONE THING important, which is holiness before God, and make grace in Christ the only way to do it. You will escape the wrath to come, and you’ll live your life for the only reason that He’s given it: to be holy by grace and get the reward.
