“So teach [us] to number our days, that we may apply [our] hearts unto wisdom,” Psalm 90:12
This thought has been on my mind since I heard it expressed this way this morning. "Life is dangerous! It has a 100% mortality rate. We should face each day with a view of living forever, but dying at any time.” One writer expressed it in this way. ‘We must live under a constant apprehension of the shortness and uncertainty of life and the near approach of death and eternity. We must so number our days as to compare our work with them, and mind it accordingly with a double diligence, as those that have no time to trifle.’
Sooner or later, we all face the same end in this life, but the difference in living forever, is WHOLLY and unconditionally on HIM who came, lived, and died for sinners that the Father chose, and for whom HE paid the debt, and those in whom the Spirit reveals HIM- Jesus Christ, the Redeemer, Substitute, Advocate, and Representative of HIS people. HE is this sinner's only and blessed HOPE. “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost,” Luke 19:10. The word lost here means, ‘that which has been marked out for condemnation and death.’ This is our lot as a result of Adam’s fall, and all of us must most certainly be condemned were it not for Christ coming and paying the sin debt for His own. Only upon completion of His death was the debt paid and sinners justified before God. Until Christ came and paid their debt, even the elect were under sin’s condemnation, Galatians 3:23.
The Holy Spirit directed the Apostle Paul to write those undeniable words- 'Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be FOUND IN HIM, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law (my own personal efforts at keeping the law), BUT that which is through the faith of Christ, THE RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH IS OF GOD by faith..." Philippians 3:8,9 'Knowing that a man is NOT justified by the works of the law, but by the faith OF Jesus Christ (not faith in...but OF) even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith OF Christ, and NOT by the works of the law: FOR by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified,' Galatians 2:16.
Herein is the sum of the Gospel in a few verses! The ONLY true hope for sinners.
