“Take Up Your Bed and Walk” (John 5:1-47)

“Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.” (vs5-9)

It doesn’t matter how impossible it seems, do what the Son of God tells you. This man is lying lame for 38 years, and Christ asks if he wants to be made whole – not if he can make himself whole or if he deserved it, but what is the desire of his heart – and then Jesus made him whole. He speaks to us the same way and enables us to obey by giving His power to us. We aren’t to stumble at our unworthiness and inablity, but we must bash our sins against the wall of grace in open confession and watch them disappear. We must take our fears of the past, the future, and all of our weakness within, and BELIEVE that He’s able to make us holy in spite of us! Rise to obedience that you’ve never had before and walk with God, taking up your sick bed as a testimony that you’re a miracle, someone lost who is now found. Christ has power over Satan. Rise up and defeat him because Christ’s power is yours. William Still said, “Men overcome Satan, through Christ's victory over him. Therefore, we may overcome him, too.

Finally, we either believe or we REFUSE the truth (vs10-47). Jesus said, “But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” It is NOT that man is unjustly blinded or unreasonably confused. He closes his eyes to the truth and refuses the Christ of scripture. They read the bible, but they reject the gospel, and have zeal without knowledge. Paul said, “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Rom 10:1-4). Christ is the reason that God saves sinners: He is the power. He healed this lame man, and then he refused to go back into bondage, confessing, “that it was Jesus who had made him will”. He followed him, even while persecuted, because man’s misinterpretations do nothing for us. Christ makes us walk with God because He is God’s appointed Savior. He says, “For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him”. He is God’s equal, the Man exalted for His obedience, and He is the One who gives life from the dead. He says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live”. We’ll stand before Him soon in judgment, and God’s appointed that all mercies flow through His Son, so that faith in Him saves us, while rejecting Him, no matter how zealous our false religion will lead to damnation.

Jesus is the message, the focus, and rejecting Him separates us from God forever. Do not be like the Pharisees who would not obey. Imitate the man who took Christ at His word and follow Him unto the end. Do not go back. He says, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you”, like a dog returning to vomit. Believe, for the rest of your life, that you can do the impossible by Christ who strengthens you, and do what He commands. Old Testament Israel could not work on the Sabbath because man can’t save himself. But, Christ, the Perfect Savior, can work in you, and then, you can walk by faith, please God, and stand for Him.

They WILL NOT come to Christ, but you must receive Him. He says, “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation”. Here is His question - not are you worthy or able, but “Do you want to be made well?” And, here is His command, “Take up your bed and walk”. Do not deny the Son of Man’s authority over you. He’s proven by His resurrection and mighty works that He can save. Therefore, do not be against Him, like the murmuring Jews who thirsted to kill Him. Be someone who does the humanly impossible because you believe that He can do it in you.
