“Why are thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him for the help of his countenance.” Psalm 42:5
I believe most Christians can identify well with the sentiment expressed in this verse. Most of us have spiritually dry seasons. Some battle intense discouragement. Others know all the right answers in their head, but grieve because they can’t seem to grab hold of them in the heart.
The reasons for these problems may be a failure to spend quality time developing a walk with God, a sin that is allowed to go on without repentance and struggle, or a reason that truly only God knows.
But the verse provides us with a wonderful remedy: Hope in God! Even if you don’t feel like it, set your mind and focus upon who God is, His faithfulness and His promises. Remember times past when you have experienced His mercy and deliverance. Hopeful confidence in God during dry seasons is like drawing a line in the sand saying, “I’m not going anywhere else. Even if I can’t feel God’s power or love, I trust in Him and will wait for Him. There is nowhere else to go!”
