Mutual Admiration Society - Broadcast for February 18, 2013
I stopped for coffee at this very nice restaurant near the Queen Mary with my date who is now my wife. When the waiter came for our order he asked: “How did you get in here?” I didn’t realize that I had been insulted but my date did. In John 5:44 we read: How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? (John 5:44 NKJV)
The Jewish leaders were very much into learning and study and longed for recognition; for titles and letters and tassels and other indicators of their learned status. They loved the best seats and they loved to be called Rabbi. They studied to be approved of by men. They didn’t study to be approved of by God, or to be honored by God. Their academic pursuit prevented them from believing, from seeing their own spiritual need.
Knowledge that begins in unbelief ends in unbelief. If you don’t start with God you don’t end with God. The Mutual Admiration Society failed to realize that the pursuit of personal honor was at the expense of spiritual truth. If we seek God we will be found in Him. If we seek the honor of men, we do so at the expense of being honored by God. It has been said that: Wise Men Still Seek Him. Are we wise men in pursuit of all that God has for us? Have we begun in faith and fear so that we can end in God’s presence? Don’t let pride and conceit keep you from everything that God has for you.
