CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: “Come Thou Fount”)

Christ is made the sure Foundation,

Christ the Head and Cornerstone,

Chosen of the Lord and precious,

Binding all the church in one;

Holy Zion’s help forever,

And her confidence alone

Is in Christ the blessed Savior,

In His righteousness alone.

Laud and honor to the Father,

Laud and honor to the Son,

Laud and honor to the Spirit,

Ever Three and ever One;

All engaged in our salvation,

By His grace alone are we

Safe and sure for heaven’s glory,

In His presence we will be.

Particular and Effectual Redemption by Christ

The Passover {a type of Christ} was not killed for any uncircumcised, but only for the Israelites, and those that were joined unto them. {Exodus 12} Neither were the priests to offer sacrifice for any other. All this was appointed of God to signify, that when the Messiah through the eternal Spirit should offer himself without spot to God, he should present unto divine justice a satisfaction for the sins of the Israel of God, and none other. Whereas it is objected, that many of the Israelites for whom the Passover was killed, and sacrifices were offered, were unbelievers and perished. I answer; so also the high priest himself might be an unbeliever and perish; yet in his priestly office he was a type of Christ notwithstanding that disparity. So the whole nation of the Israelites separated from the world to be a peculiar people unto God were a type of God's chosen Israel. Also; when Christ prayed unto his Father that they for whom he laid down his life, might receive the benefit of the same; he expressly affirmed that he prayed only for the elect, and for none other. {John 17:9} I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. Whereby he sufficiently declared that he did not then present to his Father's justice a satisfaction for the sins of any other, but only of these. Consider as well that; the highest degree of God's love to man as set forth by his Son being given, and giving himself to die for men's sins, that so he might present to his Father's justice a satisfaction for their sins. {John 10:11} I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. {John 10:15} As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. Also {Rom.8:32, I Jn.3:13, 4:9, Rom.5:8} If then we shall say, that Christ in his death presented to his Father's justice a satisfaction for the sins of all men, we shall be found to extend the highest and choicest love of God as well to hated Esau, as to beloved Jacob; as well to the seed of the serpent, as to the seed of Christ; which doctrine the Scripture will not endure.

--- John Spilsbury

{Enlarged by Benjamin Coxe, “Peculiar Interest of the Elect in Christ,” 1646}

INIQUITY LAID UPON THE LAMB

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6). Christ made satisfaction to divine justice for the iniquity of all His people enabling the Lord to a be just God and a Savior. Note five things.
1. The LORD’s people are called sheep. It was for these that the Savior came into the world, lived, died and arose again as their Substitute. "I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep" (John 10:11).
2. The LORD’s sheep acknowledge we went astray in Adam’s transgression, and we are guilty of personal iniquity. Sin alienated us from God, cut us off from access to God, filled us with enmity toward God and must be punished by the wrath of God. Having gone astray, none of the sheep have the desire or ability to come back to the narrow way that leads to life. By nature, there is no difference between those who are the LORD’s sheep and those who are not.
3. The LORD’s sheep have turned, each one individually, to his own way. Some turned to the way of open rebellion and outward wickedness; others to the way of false religion seeking to establish a righteousness of their own through pious deeds. Still others turned to the way of morality and decency believing God would accept them because of their manner of living. No matter the route, however, each was a false way and were it not for the gracious interposition of the Lord, would have ended in death (Proverbs 14:12).
4. The LORD would not let His sheep perish so He did something about our sin. God the Father collected all the iniquities of His sheep and laid them (made them to meet) on our Substitute, the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice that the combined guilt of chosen sinners is singular and is called "the iniquity," (verse 6), "the transgression" (verse 8), and "the sin" (verse 12). All the guilt of the sheep was bound together as though one tremendous burden and transferred, charged or imputed to our Savior. None but God Incarnate could bear such an awful load and not collapse beneath its weight. Like "the fit man" who led the "scapegoat" of Leviticus 16:21-22 "unto a land uninhabited," Christ took our guilt, bore it away and came back from the tomb without the burden. Neither Christ nor the sheep bear the iniquity any more!
5. Having transferred the iniquity of the sheep to His Son Who "was manifested to take away our sins" (1 John 3:5), the Lord will never hold the sheep accountable or responsible for sin. How glorious is the promise of God concerning His people: "their sins and iniquities will I remember no more" (Hebrews 10:17).
