“That Your Prayers May Not Be Hindered” (1 Pet 3:7-17)

“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.” (vs7)

The husband cannot pray, if he doesn’t love his wife. He misses out on his own blessings, squanders his life, and he cuts off his nose to spite his face because he who loves his wife, loves himself (Eph 5:28). The gospel produces no tyranny in the home, no viscous ruler; it makes men loving, as Christ loved the church, and it makes them rule with the family’s happiness and welfare in mind. Gospel husbands are selfless, giving, big-hearted and kind. They are not cruel because they CAN’T have access to God for other things, if loving the wife and treating her well are not top priorities! Yes, the wife’s submission is commanded - and singles must not marry someone who doesn’t obey the scriptures - but let every husband work on being the man that loves his wife, honors her as precious, treats her as an equal, and who leads and guides by the law of love. Let nothing be done in harshness and cruelty. (vs7)

Secondly, God’s blessings come God’s way (vs8-9). He says that doing good to those who mistreat us will bring a blessing upon us, and we’ll experience His nearness. He says, “Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” The gospel is CONTARY to human wisdom. Man says, “Get even”, and the gospel says, “Forgive, show patience, and pray God’s blessing upon your enemy, and He will bless you”. The gospel is a way of happiness and peace that the unbelieving cannot have, because it comes by obedience to the teachings of Jesus. He is Lord and Example to us, “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps” (1 Pet 2:21). Learn this new life - not only new doctrine. Put aside all opposition to gospel obedience, looking to grace for the power and to God for the reward. The gospel IS peace on God’s terms only (John 14:26-27).

We are blessed, if we’re seeking the welfare of others. He says, “For he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil” (1 Pet 3:10-12). If we live by faith, then He hears us, but He does not hear them! Let them tremble, but let us rejoice in access to God and eternal hope in the hour of persecution. Let us know that the Judge sees and sides with us. He will deliver us, powerfully answering our prayers and giving us, not only obedience to Christ but the joyful and sweet fruit of reward. There is real communion with God and pleasure, as promised, as we abide in Him (John 15:10). God is for us, and He removes the sting of those who are against.

Finally, we must either suffer for sin or holiness (1 Pet 3:13-17). Peter says, “having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil”. We must be hated for the good we do or punished and afflicted for the evil. What will it be? Will you fear man and not God? Will you choose the world’s pleasure and get the wrath of heaven, or will you honor the gospel and suffer man’s rejection? God is the One who inflicts the most pain, and He alone is to be feared and obeyed. Man kills the body, and we war against fear continually, but God destroys the soul, casts men out of the kingdom, and He makes the choice obvious. He will save and soothe the soul, but puny man can do nothing. We read, “And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. ‘And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.’ But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear”.

Look around. Everyone dies. Why would you please so feeble a creature? Why cower as if your soul won’t answer to God? He will give us power to stand, even songs in the night, and like Paul, we’ll experience miraculous deliverance. We read, “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed” (Acts 16:25-26). Believe in the resurrection. There’s another life that we’re living for, which can only be seen by faith. It is better to suffer for it than to lose the reward, better to suffer with God’s help than to suffer His damnation.
