“Faith and Hope are in God” (1 Pet 1:17-2:10)

And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Vs17-21

Our faith is in God BECAUSE OF Jesus Christ the Mediator. He is our access, lest God destroy us for our sins. He is the reason that we are safe. God made His Son responsible for the sins of His people, punished Him to the full, and then raised Him from the dead, so that we can look upon Him and say, “Christ is why I’ll be saved, He is why my prayers are heard, and He is the why the Father is FOR me instead of against”. The grace of God demands holiness - the putting away of sins - and Jesus is the only ransom and atonement. Now, because of Him, we shall be accepted, and we rest confidently, trusting God. Terror is gone, not because of Christ and us, but Christ alone. The blessings are fully ours because the Son is exalted, He obeyed God perfectly, and He is the only One we look to for blessings.

When I first heard the gospel, 1 Pet 1:18-20 was the first text that I preached from. I called it, “Redemption”. First, we needed redemption from our false religion, the religion of earning God’s favor, the religion of “God did His part, and now we must do our part”. He says, “knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your vain conduct received by tradition from your fathers” (vs18). Secondly, we’re redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, the onetime payment of God’s Son, the blood that actually put away sins, so that the redeemed, all for whom He savingly died, must be free. He says, “but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without sport” (vs19). Thirdly, this blood was shed for a people determined by God before the world began, His own chosen people, because it was always God’s plan to redeem us unto His glory. He says, “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last time for you who through Him believe in God”. Finally, if you believe the gospel, then you have hope with God through Jesus Christ. The blood was shed for you, you are redeemed, and you have the hope of the promises!

Secondly, grow (1 Pet 1:22-2:3). He says, “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious”. Do not be stagnant in gospel knowledge but advance in love and holiness, putting aside the sinful flesh, and GROWING in obedience. The gospel saved you at the beginning, and His word is the only thing that will last, so hold onto it, learn it, and increase by its power, “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever”. Hearing the gospel causes us to live the gospel. It comes with Spirit given power, cleanses our heart by faith, produces love within us, and it enables us to keep God’s commands.

Grow because persecutions make people quit. They see what it costs, and they draw back to their own destruction. Others remain zealous for a particular doctrine or part of the gospel, but they reject growing in grace and good works. Do not be this way. You have been redeemed by precious blood, so honor your Redeemer with love to others. He says, “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart”. Walk in this world feeding upon the gospel, because it is NOT enough to read the bible. Peter says, “But the word of the Lord endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached unto you”. There is no power in the word without the gospel. You must see Christ alive from the dead, sat down on the Father’s right hand, and you must see Him justifying you by faith, so that you can keep His commands as a son whom He helps. In all things, the bible must be seen in the light of Christ. Jesus must be exalted as a Savior before He can ever be obeyed as a Lord.

Finally, glorify God (1 Pet 2:4-10). He says, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy”. You are not here to honor yourself. Your life has been transformed from darkness to light, from self to the salvation of others, and we’re to live this way, even if people reject Him. Do not be led astray by the unbelief of others. “Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame”. You may lean your whole existence upon Christ, giving Him honor in every day obedience, and you will not be put to shame. You will not regret this decision.
