“Peace Be Multiplied” (1 Pet 1:1-16)

“Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the pilgrims of the Dispersion (scattering) in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, into obedience and sprinkling of blood of Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace be multiplied” (vs1-2).

Even though you are persecuted and hated for the gospel, God has grace and peace for you. He hasn’t forsaken us, and when men turn against us, know that you have help in God. He sees what you are suffering, and He will bring you to the reward. Grace is God’s goodness to us, the gift of eternal life, which includes EVERYTHING that He gives us freely because Christ died. Peace is His mind state towards us because the blood has been shed, sins are forgiven, and He give peace to our hearts because of it. God is on your side, and suffering for Christ is what grace and peace enables you to endure. Do not feel forsaken, and don’t compromise the gospel to escape the hatred. Look up to God, and as Peter teaches us, remember that you’ve been chosen to believe and obey the Son. He says, “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, into obedience”. It doesn’t matter that others hate you and the gospel. Grace is your victory and peace is your inheritance.

Secondly, the gospel is SO IMPORTANT that angels study it to learn redemption (vs3-12). He says, “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.” You and I are blessed. The gospel reveals Christ’s love and God’s grace to us: we are secure and forever saved BEFORE the foundation of the world, and we will be kept until the end, “according to His abundant mercy [He] has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (vs3-5). The gospel gives us hope in Christ and not ourselves. It points to Him and says, “Because He lives, the promises are mine, sin is paid for, and God is going to bring me to heaven”. The gospel reveals that even though we are troubled, it is for our good, and by faith, we rejoice in the invisible things. We receive our heavenly reward, believing that what we shall have is guaranteed to us as promised. The gospel is what the old prophets wrote about, when they searched in the scriptures and saw that our generation – the people after Messiah – would receive the benefits of the scriptures unfolding Him. The gospel isn’t a small thing to be ignored; it is THE most precious, glorious, and most important message in the world. It is the only thing worth our devotion.

Look at the angels. They are in God’s presence, and yet they learn the gospel from the scriptures as they are preached to us. How important is God’s word? Angels hear it. How important is it to you and me? We believe it, put our hope in it, and we live by its commands. We trust Christ in our misery and joy erupts in our hearts, because we have a coming King who shall save us, and every tear is for our good. He says, “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and gory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith –the salvation of your souls”. The gospel is everything to us. Don’t neglect it, but consider the gospel as God’s precious gift from heaven.

Finally, God’s called us to holiness (vs13-16). He says, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy”. We have the inheritance and the privileges, and God teaches us what to do with them. We are not to think, “I’m saved by grace, so I don’t have to obey; it only matters that I believe in election”. Election is unto holiness. He sprinkled Christ’s blood upon your heart, which is faith in the finished work, and He SANCTIFIED you into obedience, so that you walk by faith and live pleasing to God (vs2). Holiness is obedience, and it is the passion and devotion of our life. We are saved, we have grace and peace by the gospel, and now we use it rightly because God’s called us to do His will, rather than continue in our former life of sin. Holiness is important to God, utterly vital, so holiness is our mission too.
