Valuing Life: Why do we value the life of some children and not others?
Today marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the United States. Since that decision in 1973, over 54.5 million American Babies have died as a result of abortion. There are over 3300 abortion everyday – about 137 – or one dead baby every thirty seconds.
On Sunday, Rebecca Hagelin wrote in the Washington Times of irony surrounding three national events all taking place this week in the nation’s capital. The three events are:
The inauguration of the first black president who is also the most pro-abortion president in history.
The celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day
And the marking of the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion
Haglin writes, “In the wake of Sandy Hook’s horror, this year’s March for Life begs an urgent answer to an important question — why do we treasure the lives of some children and not others? Why does Mr. Obama take 23 executive actions to “save one life” through gun control, while promoting and funding an organization like Planned Parenthood that actively kills others? In light of the fact that Planned Parenthood’s very origins were birthed in an effort to specifically abort black babies, how is it that this particular president is their greatest champion? And how can America collectively practice such evil and simultaneously celebrate the life, teachings and work of the brave and brilliant King?”
March for Life recently produced a video that incorporates a speech made by President Obama with images of children and pro-life rallies. The speech, on the importance of protecting our children, was made in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook tragedy. The point of the video is to underscore the importance of protecting ALL of our children, even the smallest and most unprotected ones.
Here is the transcript of the President’s comments:
“They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, children of their own.
This is our first task: caring for our children. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how as a society we will be judged. By that measure, can we honestly say we’re doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm? I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is “No.”
These tragedies must end. You will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. But that can’t be an excuse for inaction.
If there’s even one step that we can take to save another child, then surely we have an obligation to try.
Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage? That the politics are too hard? Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year, is somehow the price of our freedom?”
On today’s program we will discuss that issue by considering the requirements of the 6th Commandment – “Thou Shalt Not Kill” and also looking at a couple of very helpful resources on the issue of abortion and how Christians should respond.
One resource is Scott Klusendorf’s book, “The Case for Life” – Equipping Christians to Engage the Culture and the other resource is Dr. RC Sproul’s book, “Abortion – a rational look at an emotional issue”
