*Tongues is proof you got the Spirit. No tongues, then no Spirit! No Spirit, no salvation.
*If you were baptized, and the person baptizing you did so in "the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit."...well the bad news is, you just ain't saved. It has to be done saying, "In the name of Jesus" or it's of no value at all.
*Jesus is not just the Son of God, but He is also the Father. Oh, and He is the Spirit. There are not three persons in the Godhead, just one. That one person reveals Himself in different modes depending on what He is trying to accomplish. So the doctrine of the Trinity,.... well that is just a pagan myth!
These are just three of the false doctrinesregularly taught by such groups as the Apostolic Pentecostals, and the United Pentecostal Church. Since they teach that Jesus is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, they are also sometimes referred to as "Jesus-only" believers.
I just want to take a few moments and point out that when any cult rejects the doctrine of the Trinity, its seems that a multitude of other false doctrines follow closely behind. With the APs and UPCs, you get the false doctrines listed above, plus others, as well as a huge dose of Pharisaical legalism that mandates shirt sleeve length, sabbath rules, make-up and jewelry allowed, etc...
There is a common error made in establishing doctrine that leads to this kind of false doctrine so often being taught. It happens when two truths are clearly taught in Scripture, yet they seem impossible to reconcile (e.g. Jesus is fully God, yet He is also fully man.) The difficulty in reconciling these truths has resulted in numerous false doctrines being widely accepted. And it seems that the doctrine of the Trinity has become the doctine most often attack by cults as a result of this difficulty.
To avoid falling into this deception we must always remember that if the Scripture clearly reveals a doctrine, even if another doctrine is difficult to reconcile with it, you cannot drop either truth. For example, the Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus is God (Jn 1:1), but it also clearly teaches that He is a man (1Tim 2:5). You may or may not have difficulty in reconciling these two truths; however, either way, if you adopt a belief system that denies either truth then you are teaching false doctrine! And it is a very serious error to do this!
The Bible clearly and with utter finality teaches the doctrine of the Trinity. The "paradox" is that cults argue that you cannot have three persons each being God, and yet have only one God. So the next time you have an AP or a UPC tell you that it is impossible to have multiple persons yet one God ask them to read the words of Jesus in Matthew chapter 19:
Mat 19:4 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,' Mat 19:5 and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH' ? Mat 19:6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."(emphasis added)
Then ask them: "Before they are married, a man and a woman are clearly two persons. What about after they are married? According to Jesus the TWO become ONE, and so much so that He said "THEY ARE NO LONGER TWO BUT ONE FLESH!" So Jesus Himself gives us an example of two persons that are one. So if two can be one, do you still think it is impossible that three persons can eternally be one?" This may help them see that a paradox does not have to be false.
Next you can give them some verses that demand a distinction of persons in the Godhead, here are a few you can start with:
Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
Gen 3:22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"—
Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.
Joh 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
