A Doer of the Word - Broadcast for January 23, 2013
What is the law of liberty? Are they the rules that set you free? But don't rules get broken and then freedom lost? In James 1:25 we read: But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:25 NKJV)
If one stoops to look into the perfect law of liberty, that is the word of God, continues in it, does not forget to do it; that one will be blessed in what he does. If you look into, gaze into that which sets you free, and do the work of freedom, you will be blessed.
Some think James is speaking of the law, the ten commandments, the rules of the old covenant; but that law accuses and condemns. The law of liberty is the gospel, the good news, the grace of God. If we look to it, continue in it, not forget it, but do the work of it; we are blessed in the work. Good fruit follows the work that flows out of grace and liberty. The blessing flows as we keep our gaze on grace that flows down to all who believe. Our work is not to earn grace it is because of grace and oh how happy is the one who does this work.
