“I Sent to Know Your Faith” (1 Thess 2:13-3:5)

“For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know. For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.” (1 Thess 3:4-5)

There is a vain labor when people don’t believe the gospel unto the end, so we endeavor to do what we can to help them. We don’t only preach the gospel, but we water the soil and care for souls our whole life long. Paul wasn’t impressed with titles and the riches of the world. He knew that his reward was seeing SOULS whom he loved and served in the Kingdom at the end. He said, “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy” (1 Thess 2:19-20). Likewise, because this is our life, we also give ourselves to people’s welfare, rather than seeking our own ambitions to the neglect of His church.

We have many obstacles in this holy path. Paul said, “For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved… Therefore we wanted to come to you – even I, Paul, time and again – but Satan hindered us” (1 Thess 2:14-18). Just because you’re doing the RIGHT thing doesn’t mean that it will be easy. Paul, like the Lord and the prophets, and all of the church, was persecuted for what he preached. But, we don’t quit because it is hard. Like a farmer who experiences drought or too much rain, we go to God, find strength, and then do what He enables us. Paul said, “Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to it” (1 Thess 3:1-3). It may be more ardent prayer, or more expense, but we don’t quit loving. We’ve been appointed to suffer, so that the Savior may prove Himself faithful. What we cannot do, He will help us do, and He blesses our perseverance.

What kind of faith do you have? Saving faith follows the church and the apostle’s doctrine, “because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thess 2:13). Saving faith suffers, but it continues to the end, valuing people more than pleasures. We have this faith, and it works perseverance and love for the brethren.
