“All Things Which Are Happening” (Col 4:2-18)

Tychicus, a beloved brother, faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts, with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you all things which are happening here.” (vs7-9)

It is important for us to know what is happening with our brethren, so that we can pray for them and be encouraged by their steadfastness. When others SUFFER, and yet are strong in the Lord, then we are encouraged to persevere. Paul was imprisoned, but he is not complaining. He sees more hope in Jesus Christ, so that the believer’s cup runs over: it is MORE than half full. David said, “Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me…You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my heard with oil; my cup runs over (Ps 23:4-5)”. We have the inheritance, the grace of God, and eternal life is ours assuredly, so why complain? We have tears and terrors, but we’re on the Lord’s side, and there are more for us than against (2 Kings 6:16-17; 2 Chron 32:7-8).

We must be encouraging people, so we must have contact with people, so they can hear our good report and pray for our needs. We are not in this alone. “Christ is all” means that you are to feed His sheep and love His people. When you see God’s hand, let others know the glory, and when you hear of brethren persevering, be encouraged. Do not live as if Christ’s people are not important. Be in fellowship with the brethren, even those not in your immediate circle.

Secondly, the church in the home is common in the New Testament (Col 4:12-15). We read, “Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas and the church that is in his house”. Don’t be deceived by large numbers. If two or three are gathered in the Name of Christ, then He is there (Matt 18:19-20). The gospel isn’t about how many people or how elaborate the building; it is about Christ worshiped in truth, Christians loving as commanded, and all things being done to God’s glory. Paul knew the brethren and had intimacy with them. Often, small churches are large extended families and gospel refuges. They’re places where believers can gather in simplicity and purity.

They built no temples in the New Testament, but they used whatever was available to them. They could have joined in with the heretics and had more numbers and an easier time, but they CHOSE to separate themselves from false religion, even if it meant worshiping in small groups ignored by the world and rejected. We don’t care. We choose Christ over ease and comfort. We worship where He is, even at great cost to ourselves.

Don’t fool yourself pursuing numbers. It doesn’t matter to Him if it is 10 people or 10,000, and it must be the same with us. The preacher in a home is as faithful as the one in the larger assembly, and small groups do important work.

Finally, fulfill the ministry that God’s given you (Col 4:16-18). He says, “Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, ‘Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it”. Don’t be slothful, sitting on the sidelines while others serve God, but put your back into it and labor with your gifts. You don’t need someone else’s ability, just fulfill your ministry. You don’t need to set the world on fire, just keep your own light burning and show Christ to others. The ministry isn’t an optional part of Christianity, but Christ is all, therefore we are DUTY BOUND to serve Him (Col 3:11).

Do not fear. Handle hardships by the power of God, but don’t draw back because of persecution, for He is with you. Fulfill your ministry, which is the same as being the person that God’s called you to be. In this, you’ll be filled also. The gospel, the more that it becomes our life, the better it is for us and the church, the better it is with God.
