“The Work That God Does” (Eccl 3)
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up…He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from the beginning to the end” (vs1-3, 11). There is a time for everything under the sun because God uses both war and peace, planting and harvest, embracing and refraining from embracing to teach us valuable things. When you have hard times, remember that good times are coming. Learn from your struggles, and in the day of joy, remember to give thanks for the season. God deals with us as a farmer with his crop. There is a time to plant, a time to prune, and there is a time for reaping – “a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace” (vs4-8). You may labor without visible fruit, but this planting and plowing time is needful. Then, when fruits springs up, remember it is but a time in God’s plan and do not think that distresses are forever gone. The time for suffering is planet earth, but there will be a time for heavenly bliss, just not now.
God knows what He’s doing. Trust yourself to Him in every season, learn, and rejoice. Let your tears flow in times of trial, but remember the good times you’ve had and the good times in the future that are coming. Weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Ps 30:5). Do not be moved by the seasons. They are temporary.
Finally, Judgment Day isn’t here yet, so don’t be distracted by the prosperity of sinners. We read, “Moreover I saw under the sun: in the place of judgment, wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, iniquity was there. I said in my heart, ‘God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work” (Eccl 3:16-17). Sinners SEEM to be enjoying themselves, but just like the Christmas turkey gets extra plump in November. Their end is near, and they are not to be envied. Grace saved us from God’s wrath by making us righteous, forgiving our sins, and giving us holiness in conduct. These things are so essential that Christ died and God planned them from all eternity, because the wages of sin are eternal. So, when you see sinners in the place of the righteous, when false prophets deceive many from their pulpits, and when oppressors are in the place where kindness should be, just remember, God is judging everyone in the End. Wickedness, even though it is everywhere, is not winning. Sinners are being fattened for the slaughter. Wickedness is doing God’s bidding, and then He’ll punish the transgressors in hell. Be righteous, therefore, and stick to Christ and the gospel.
