“All Is Vanity” (Eccl 1)

"The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.' (vs1-2)

Everything is vain except obeying the Son of God. He’s the One that God’s exalted with salvation in His hands, and He’s the reason that you’ve been made, which is to serve Him (Col 1:15-18; Phil 2:9-11). It has been the same since the Garden, when man was given a job to do, which is obey, and it extends into the realms of future eternity. God’s given man ONE THING to do, created him for ONE PURPOSE, and we are wise, like the axe that chops down trees or the car that drives, to do what we’ve been created for. Solomon says elsewhere, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Eccl 12:13-14).

You will find momentary pleasure in sin, but never satisfaction. You will only find real fulfillment and eternal peace OBEYING the Son from the heart - believing that He died for you and rose again, believing that He has power to make you do His will, and believing that He is on your side in salvation. This grace of Christ isn’t to be buried like a hidden treasure, while the rest of my time is spent “looking for joy” and pleasure somewhere else. The gospel isn’t an insurance policy tucked away, unloved, but there in case of death. The gospel is everything. It proclaims God the Savior of sinners, and there is no business more important or spectacular. If we seek satisfaction anywhere else – in friends and family, in wealth and achievements, in anything but God giving us power to honor Him – we will find disillusionment and emptiness. “Vanity of vanities’, says the Preacher… all is vanity”. Comfort is in God because He is the purpose of your life. Live as He commands and find fulfillment that is nowhere else.

We’re not satisfied with what we have in this world, because we always want more (vs7-8). He says, “All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again. All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.” We see it, demand it, and then we want something else soon after. The earth experiences this vanity, and we are no different. Just as the clouds drop rain that fills the oceans from the rivers, even so, the clouds receive rainwater from the oceans, and the process goes on repeatedly. Man is like the hamster on the wheel, spinning but going nowhere… doing, but never finding fulfillment in his deeds. The remedy isn’t a new wife or car; it is peace within that only God can give, and that He’ll only give in obedience. We can’t have God’s peace any other way.

Solomon had a unique experience because he was king and had power to try everything you can think of to satisfy himself, and he came back with “all is vanity and grasping for the wind” (vs12-14). He says, “I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” Solomon went before us, like Job, to teach us that pursuing satisfaction in this world is empty, even as Job reveals the kindness of God to the suffering. No one lost more than Job, and no one has tried more ways to find fulfillment in life than Solomon. But, learn from his wisdom. He experienced these things, so that we don’t have to chase them down, and bless God if you know the vanity of life as Solomon experienced it. It is His mercy to give us internal holes that the world can’t fill, so that He can give us the satisfaction of Christ. You have not been created to find a new path. God’s told you what you must do, and everything else will prove meaningless eventually. Be warned and led to the gospel, because the flesh will never rest. God satisfies us on His terms, and then He will bring us to bliss.
