Foreknowledge: Omniscience or Foreordination?

Today the preacher on the radio taught that the doctrine of foreknowledge has reference to what God knew beforehand (omniscience) and not foreordination. In particular he addressed the doctrine of election as related to foreknowledge and informed the audience that God chose Jacob because He knew Jacob would choose God. Too, Esau, he declared, was not elected because God knew beforehand that Esau would reject God.

The preacher’s analogy of God’s foreknowledge was by comparing God’s foreknowledge with Halley’s Comet. The minister declared that as Edmond Halley predicted the appearance of the comet without producing the comet, God knows who will choose Him even though He is not instrumental in the production of the choice.

I disagree because:
1. When foreknowledge is linked to salvation the meaning of foreknowledge includes foreordination (1 Peter 1:2, 20; Acts 2:23; Romans 8:29).
2. A misunderstanding of man’s willingness to choose God because of man’s inherent depravity (John 5:40; 6:44; 10:26).
3. A disregard for Romans 9:11: “For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.”
4. The analogy is deficient. True, Edmond Halley only predicted the comet based upon Newton’s laws and historical data and did not produce the comet. However, God not only knew when the comet would appear in our Solar System, He also created the comet and causes it to maintain its orbit (Colossians 1:17). God foreordains the salvation of the elect and by His power creates life and makes them willing in the day of His power (Psalm 110:3).
If you came to Christ for salvation God did not simply know beforehand of your decision, He foreordained to give you faith whereby you now believe: “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me” (John 6:37).
