“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Dueteronomy 33:27a
It is a good thing when we can see and feel our need for God. Regrettably, God seems to have to remind us of this often as we are prone to forget just how much we need Him. But, our need of God drives us to seek God as our refuge, and there is no better place to be!
We need to see our need of God, but we also need to see our God! The verse here notes His greatness by calling Him the eternal God. Our refuge is not human-sized. He has existed from all eternity and is not bound by time and space. He has the power of being in Himself and is not dependent on anything or anyone else. His power and wisdom are perfect and there are no defects, weakness, evil or shadows in Him. Truly, there is none like Him.
This great, eternal God who is bigger than our minds can conceive is also one of tender love and mercy. The verse gives the image of God holding His children in His everlasting arms. This big God delights to condescend to lovingly hold up, support and sustain His beloved children. Through whatever pain, fear or challenge, look to this great God. Run to Him as your refuge.
