“That I May Gain Christ” (Phil 3:1-4:1)

“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as garbage, that I may gain Christ” (vs7-8).

The only way to have Christ and eternal life is to RENOUNCE everything about yourself and come to God with NOTHING but Jesus only. We cannot be saved by His righteousness plus our own, so we throw away our so-called merit and come to God with nothing to commend us except what Christ has done for sinners. He continues, “and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (vs9).

We are not better than others. You get salvation because of grace, when you have nothing to provide. This way is narrow, but we take it. It is better to throw away my righteousness than to have it hang around my neck for eternity while I suffer in hell. Paul said, “For we are the [true worshipers], who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh, if anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighty day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ”. It is better to give up on the things that impress people – like how religious I am as compared to others – than to give up on Christ who pleases God. This narrow way of faith is trusting Christ to have done EVERYTHING that we need to be saved.

I was a religious preacher before hearing the gospel, and I had zeal, knowledge, and impressiveness to the eyes of others, but God showed me that my best works were filthy rags and He’d NEVER accept my sin-stained efforts. He is already pleased with Christ, and the narrow way of faith is believing that He has done everything necessary for us to be saved. This renouncing of all else for Him must also happen to you. Put everything about yourself in the loss column, and have only Christ as your commendation. The Lord will bless you for His sake, if He’s all that you have.

Secondly, every believer is to press forward to the mark, and none of us is to fall away (vs9-16). Paul says, “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those thins which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Chris Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind”. We are to believe unto the end, getting to heaven by the only way possible, which is devotion. Grace produces more than a religious fever: it enables us to lay our life down, press toward the prize, and it strengthens us to stand amidst opposition and temptation. He says, “And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection of the dead”.

We are NOT living for the here and now, but eternity is in our hearts, and we strive to get the bliss that He’s giving us. We are not people temporarily infatuated with Christ, but our love is rekindled and renewed, and our commitment to Him is everything to us. Let us press on because no one enters heaven on a special pass. Faith is surrender. Trust Him as the Number One in your life because these alone shall make it.

Finally, the Son of God is able to bring you to heaven, so trust Him. He will not let you down because He is unfailing (vs17-21). We read, “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform your lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself”. You may be weak and tempted, but He’s able to change your vile body, so He’s able to subdue your lusts even now. You don’t make it on your own, but TRUSTING Christ because you have no strength, He carries you. Be sure and confident about the hope of heaven and the Lord’s helping hand. Be bold and wait for Him, because you don’t trust Him in vain. The gospel is full or promises, and it is by these that we keep the commands. If He has the power, and He does, then rest assured.
