“What Is His Name?” (Prov 30:1-9)

“The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance. This man declared to Ithiel—to Ithiel and Ucal: Surely I am more stupid than any man, And do not have the understanding of a man. I neither learned wisdom Nor have knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?’” (vs1-4)

Agur asks the most important question: “Who is God and what is the name of His Son?” This is the highest knowledge, for when we find God, we find ETERNAL life, which is greater than any earthly treasure. The gospel is the most important study, so that if you only learn one thing and only know one book, then you surpass all human wisdom, and you’ve entered the saving knowledge of Christ. It is weak minded to conceive of a Great God who is not the center of attention, as if He’d let you praise and worship someone else, as if He is not worthy of glory nor jealous for His honor. But, the God of the bible will reveal Himself to sinners, hypocrites, and people who’ve gone the wrong way, if we confess our stupidity. Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind”, and again, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see’. Therefore your sin remains” (John 9:39-41).

I know this is contrary to natural knowledge, because we think that we must be worthy to get grace, but GRACE has nothing to do with us deserving it. God doesn’t pay us what we deserve, when He blesses us, but because of Christ’s blood, He gives us what we DON’T deserve by His generosity only (Rom 4:4-6). I cannot deserve anything from God, but He can GIVE every blessing to me.

Seek this knowledge of God. Don’t waste your soul on things that don’t matter, but find out who He is, learn of His Son, and esteem His knowledge supremely. Wise men still seek after Jesus Christ, but we come empty, knowing nothing, and we ask God to teach us. Therefore, become a fool, so that you may be wise, and confess your stupidity. Paul wrote, “Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”, and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile” (1 Cor 3:18-20).

Don’t think that you have to be higher than a “sinner”. Grace will help the helpless, but it will turn the full away, “for by strength shall no man prevail” (1 Sam 2:1-10). Grace will give sight to the blind, but those who THINK they see will inherit darkness. Do not think so highly of yourself. Confess your stupidity and ask God to bless you in your need, because He is good. I see young people, and my heart goes out to you. Find out who God is, worship Him in Jesus Christ, and make THIS your life’s ambition. All human knowledge and every other ambition, compared to knowing God, is like burning up in a house while you search for an old shoe, or spending your time clipping someone’s toenails while they bleed to death from a gunshot wound to the head.

Secondly, it is true, every word of God is pure, and we must submit ourselves to the gospel AS IT IS, rather than as we’d like it to be. We read, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar” (Prov 30:5-6).

Have you ever read the bible and thought, “God should have said that differently”, or, “This doesn’t fit into my five points of Calvinism, so I will ignore it”? These are FLESHLY thoughts, and we must repent of them. The Lord Jesus, not John Calvin, Martin Luther, or Charles Spurgeon is Who we worship, and we bow to everything that He says. Paul said, “Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:26-27).

Sometimes, He says that no man can come to Him except the Father draw him, and in the next breadth, He may say to everyone who can hear His voice, “Come” (John 6:35-58). He proclaims that He predestines everyone who shall be saved, and He also commands us to preach the gospel to all the world, because He is willing for all to be saved (Eph 1:11; Luke 13:34). He teaches us that we are saved apart from any works that we’ve done, and He teaches us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, bringing fruit to God, lest we be hypocrites. He teaches that we are justified by faith and justified by works, that we are utterly secure in Christ, and we are warned to continue in the faith, believing God unto the very end! All of this may be contradictory to us, but Agur already confessed that we are ignorant babes who need instruction (Prov 30:1-4). It is NOT on us to disbelieve the bible simply because we can’t put it together rationally in our limited minds. It is not on us to emphasize any doctrine above another. We are responsible to preach what it says. The gospel must be preached in the text according to the text and context, and never according to our pet doctrine that we want to prove.

God is not lopsided, as many would make Him, emphasizing parts of His word and DISREGARDING or explaining other pars away. The person at your job may need to hear, “Husbands love your wives”, so that they can be open to hearing about Christ loving the church. The law must be used to condemn, and the cross must be preached in its exclusivity, profiting only those who believe, people chosen from before time. The gospel is never to be altered for human opinion or to fit in with a group. God alone is your Savior, and everything that He says is true, even if man stands against you (Rom 3:4). Make no caricature of God, like at the carnival, where a man draws people with exaggerations to their faces, like a huge nose or long neck. Preach what God says, rather than what you want Him to say, and you’ll see the wondrous image of Christ revealed to you. Your wisdom is to believe that His word is pure, and with no alterations, to pass it only lovingly and clearly to others.

Finally, like Agur, submit yourself to be ruled by God. He says, “Two things I request of You (deprive me not before I die): remove falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches – feed me with the food allotted to me; lest I be full and deny You, and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God” (vs7-9). He doesn’t want to rule his life, because he knows he’s wicked and prone to wonder – that he will leave Christ for anything that catches his eye, emotions, or human ambition. Therefore, he doesn’t want much success, not if it means cold-heartedness to God (1 John 3:2). Likewise, he knows that he needs comfort and sufficiency, or he cannot serve God faithfully, so he asks never to be tried and tested too much. He trusts God to care for Him and provide ENOUGH, even in lean times, so that he can look up to heaven, thank God for Christ, and continue.

I ask. Do you know yourself? If so, then you fear being left to yourself, because you know what you’ll do. God pities the soul that says, “Rule me”, and then He takes over. You have come to Him for help, and He will guide you to heaven by the skill of His hand.
