Rest - The Only Cure

Rest: The Only Cure

The other day I aggravated my back in some way and woke up the next day in great pain. The pain got worse until I could hardly function (most of you have experienced this). I began to try various means to relieve the pain, such as drugs, heat and ice. In the end, the thing that finally relieved my suffering was REST. I had to completely stop doing anything and just rest my back. The relief came quickly.

Sin is the great aggravation of the believer; that which causes us daily pain. The pain of guilt and sorrow over sin often gets worse and worse, and we try everything we knot to relieve it. But there is only one thing that will relieve the sin sufferer… REST! The guilt of sin cannot be removed by striving or working but only by looking to Christ Who was punished for my sin, and Who said He put it away, made the payment, the Father accepted it, and the sins of the believer are completely forgiven and covered. If we could but rest in that thought, rest with the assurance that we need not atone for our sins, because Christ already has; that we need not pay for them by doing penance or trying to make amends, because Christ made amends; if we could just believe Him and rest in His promise, we will find relief from our pain. Don’t listen to anyone who prescribes various religious drugs or cures, just REST in Christ. “For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy one of Israel; In returning and REST ye shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength…” – Isaiah 30:15

- Pastor Paul Mahan
