“The Blood of Christ” (Eph 2:11-3:7)

“At that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (vs12-13).

Christ’s blood has brought us near to God and made us one with His people, in a new identity, the church. We are blessed to have Christ die for our sins. He removed them by His blood, and He made the payment that atones our transgressions. This gift is of the highest value, because it is God’s blood, the blood of the Son, and it is the only and sufficient payment (Acts 20:28).

Years ago, our current deacon was listening to me on the radio, and I was concluding with, “Is the blood enough?” My point was that it SATISFIED God and put away sins. Now, is it enough for you? Will you trust this blood to save you by itself without any help that you contribute? His answer and the answer of God’s elect is “Yes”. I believe the blood has accomplished redemption, because God raised Him from the dead and He declares complete reconciliation, “for by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Heb 10:14). He removed our sins, which separated us, by a just payment, when He bore them upon Himself, and then He took them away.

His blood is our relationship with God and with each other – “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both [Jew and Gentile] one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity”, which we had with each other (Eph 2:14-16). We have no distinctions that matter. We are saved the same way, by the same payment of Jesus Christ, and we who believe have the strongest family bond. Justice put away our sins, and faith realizes this, believes it, and puts its trust in the finished work of Christ for every blessing, even acceptance with God. God’s elect have been atoned, and we will all be given faith: Christ died and we CANNOT perish.

Secondly, the Spirit brings us to the Father (vs14-18). “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father”. This is important because Paul is still dealing with power and good works (Eph 1:15-18; Eph 2:10). We need to know the Spirit’s help, and we must know our access to God as a Father who is willing to do us good, ready to save, and reconciled for every blessing! The Holy Spirit is our teacher. He opens our eyes to the Father, gives us faith, and He is the One that will perform our goodness in us. We have a triune God. He is three in one (1 John 5:7). The Father gave the Son and gives the blessings, the Son mediates for us by His death and resurrection, and the Spirit performs every good thing in us, which we could never do! Bless His name for full salvation. He calls us to obedience, and He gives us Himself to make it happen. We are born desperate sinners, and yet God’s given us God, so that we can honor Him, and then He reward us forever. Be confident in your inheritance. Walk at peace with your fellow saint, because God so richly blesses you.

Finally, God reveals the gospel to us, so that we can love and serve the church, glorifying Him in our lives (Eph 2:19-3:7). We read, “For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles – if indeed you have heard of the stewardship of the grace of God, which was given to me for you, how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery… which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets; that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Chris through the gospel, of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power”. Paul was depraved, falsely justifying himself, and lost, and then God came to Him and REVEALED the gospel mystery, making him an ambassador. He is an important member of Christ’s body the church. He is a servant, and so are all who believe! You have a new family by the Spirit, and you’re to serve Christ’s body by the gifts that He gives you. We read, “Now, therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone” (vs19-22).

Be conscious of your blessings and responsibilities. Your spiritual family is your most important family on earth, and your love to them is the fruit of God’s love to you. He hasn’t saved you for a mere one on one relationship. He’s made you a member of His body, the church, so that we can serve each other and do His will from the heart. Grace gives you the knowledge of Christ, and by the same Spirit, He gives you power and gifts to honor Him. Know your salvation, how privileged you are, and how these privileges and promises enable you to serve Him. The blood of Christ justifies God and saves you.
