“Established in Righteousness” (Prov 25:1-15)

What really matters isn’t oratory or how cleverly the message is presented. It matters that it be FULL of truth and love, clear to your mind, so that you can obey the doctrine. We are not here for entertainment or delusion, but for God’s glory in Jesus Christ - that we might be saved and His word may GIVE us life. 1 Thess 2:13 says, “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard of us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works effectively in you who believe”. Peter said, “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Pet 1:23). The power is God’s, so let us look to Him for it now.

First, God’s love in Christ is our full time employment. This is what we’re about from day until night, even until we leave this earth (vs1-2). He says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings to search out a matter”. We are INQUIRING into His love, so that we can live the gospel. We cannot love Him unless He FIRST loves us (1 John 4:19). Ephesians 3:19 says, “to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God”.

True repentance and faith, true seeking after the Lord, is, “Lord, I have been wrong, but make me right on your terms by Jesus Christ. Forgive me of what I’ve done, and make me able to obey You by Your power and strength.” Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart”. Jer 3:13 continues, “Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the Lord your God, and have scattered your charms to alien deities under every green tree, and you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.”

God takes sinners away from His righteous throne. Some, He pardons, and others, He punishes (vs4-5). He says, “Take away the dross from silver, and it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness”. The pardoned are atoned and righteous in the blood of Christ, so that He has rightfully removed our sins, “to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom 3:26). Meanwhile, the wicked are punished for their sins, so that righteousness reaps a reckoning and payment. Revelations 19:2-3 says, “For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her. Again, they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!” The result is no more sin before Him, and His righteous throne is unchallenged. Power and uprightness has accomplished this. Love has put away our sins and spared us!

Secondly, He teaches us humility (vs6-7). He says, “Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of the great; for it is better that he say to you, ‘Come up here,’ than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen”. It doesn’t matter who you are: humble yourself before God, and you will be exalted. He will lift you up, show you grace, and you will have obvious character in the eyes of others. Likewise, if you are proud, no matter who you are, then God will debase you, pull you down, and embarrass you openly. Your fraudulence will be known – “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).

Make peace with others as quickly as you can, lest the prolonged war damage you, and your own sin is exposed (Prov 25:8-10). He says, “Do not go hastily to court; for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor has put you to shame? Debate your case with your neighbor, and do not disclose the secret to another; lest he who hears it expose your shame, and your reputation be ruined”. This is true in homes, where husband and wives must RESOLVE things in a God honoring fashion, where people must see they are wrong, rather than pressing the wrong of others. We seek PEACE instead of war, and we want love to rule, because when punishment and judgment come in, then everyone gets hurt. You are also guilty, so hold the battle to a minimum and make peace. Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men”.

Finally, only the obedient will regard a gospel preacher or brother in Christ as one who does them good (Prov 25:11-12). He says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear”. If you heed instruction, then you’ll love the man who preaches Christ to you, and you’ll count his labor a blessing. You’ll kiss the hand that hurt you, because he saved your soul. He didn’t do you wrong when he corrected you, but he points you to the Son, not only showing the wrong, but also the Savior who will help you assuredly.

Be a faithful messenger, because only faithful messengers will be rewarded (vs13). Do not fear. He says, “Like the cold of snow in time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes the soul of his masters”. God is pleased with truth tellers. They will have the love of the church, and they will have His perfect approval. Do not despair because of what you lose in His service. Look to what you’re gaining, and know that God’s delight in you is real!

False prophets serve themselves (vs14). He says, “Whoever falsely boasts of giving is like clouds and wind without rain.” Jude 1:12, says, “These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots”. They don’t preach holiness by the cross, nor do they live by the example. Peter says, “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Pet 4:10).

We must use meekness and gentleness to save others, and we must speak this way to God (vs15). He says, “By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone”. The Almighty won’t be won by the force of your words, so let gentle submission rule you. You can plead, but you cannot force God, so let your tenderness and tears touch Him. Do not try wrath. Try God’s way of gentleness, and He will make men hear you, even as He hears you Himself. Paul said, (2 Cor 10). The woman who’s daughter was possessed said, “Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ… for though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Cor 10:1-4). Matt 15:21-28 teaches how to prevail with God, for she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master’s table. Then Jesus answered and said to her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.’ And her daughter was healed from that very hour”.
