*Persevering in Prayer
Genesis 32:24-26 ‘And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.’
Matthew 15:22-28 ‘And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.’
Luke 18:1 ‘And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;’
Ephesians 6:18 ‘Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;’

*From “The Afflicted Man’s Companion: A Directory for Persons and Families Afflicted with Sickness or any Other Distress” by John Willison
Particular Directions To Those Who Are Sharply Afflicted With Sickness, Or Long Trouble:
1. Justify God in the greatest afflictions which befall you.
2. Labor to be sensible of God’s hand under heavy affliction, and beware of stupidity and unconcern under it.
3. Beware of misconstruing God’s dealings towards you, and of charging him foolishly.
4. Under sore trouble and distress, labor to exercise a strong and lively faith.
5. Labor to bear with patience whatever load of trouble the Lord appoints for you.
6. Beware of envying wicked men, when you see them in health and prosperity.
7. Guard against repining and murmuring against the providence of God, under heavy sickness and affliction.

*From Archbishop James Ussher, Let me hear some of those Reasons which prove that God is the Author of the Holy Scriptures.
1. The true godliness and holiness, wherewith the writers of the Scriptures shined as lamps in their times, and far surpassed men of other religions.
2. The simplicity, integrity, and sincerity of these writers, in matters that concern themselves and those that belong unto them.
3. The quality and condition of the penmen of these Holy Writings: some of whom were never trained up in the school of man, and yet in their writings show that depth of wisdom, that the most learned philosophers come not nigh unto.
4. The matter of the Holy Scripture being altogether of heavenly doctrine, and favoring nothing of an earthly or worldly affection, but everywhere renouncing and condemning the same, declareth the God of Heaven to be the only Inspirer of it.
5. The doctrine of Scripture is such as could never be breed in the brains of man.
6. The sweet concord between these writings, and the perfect coherence of all things contained in them.
7. A continuance of wonderful prophecies, foretelling things to come so long before, marked with their circumstances.
8. The great majesty, full of heavenly wisdom and authority, such as is meet to proceed from the glory of God, shining in all the Holy Scriptures.
9. In speaking of matters of the highest nature, they go not about to persuade men by reasons, as philosophers and orators; but absolutely require credit to be given to them, because the Lord hath spoken it.
10. The end and scope of Scriptures, is for the advancement of God’s glory, and the salvation of man’s soul.
11. The admirable power and force that is in them to convert and alter men’s minds, and to incline their hearts from vice to virtue, though they be quite contrary to men’s affections.
12. The Scriptures, as experience showeth, have the power of God in them, to humble a man when they are preached, and cast him down to hell, and afterward to restore and raise him up again.
13. The writers of the Holy Scriptures are the most ancient of all others.
14. The deadly hatred that the Devil and all wicked men carry against the Scriptures, to cast them away and destroy them, and the little love that most men do bear unto them, prove them to be of God.
15. The marvelous preservation of the Scriptures.
