John six six six is an interesting verse: It reads: From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. (NKJV) It could be read: going forward they went back. They no longer went in the way with Jesus.
Jesus had gathered a following. A group of people who called Him “Master” and who listened to His teaching and followed Him from place to place. Some of them simply wanted to see Jesus do another miracle, some liked the words Jesus spoke. Most expected Jesus to help them in some way or another. But now each of them were confronted with a decision, will I accept Christ for who He claims to be or, will I return to my life and reject the commitment He calls for?
Everyone has to decide and most will decide not to follow Christ. Jesus gave everything to buy us out of sin and death. In return we must take Christ in and we must be in Christ. The commitment we make is eternal. We are saying yes to Christ forever or if we reject Christ that is forever as well. I find it comforting that some who rejected Christ along the way and even denied Him came to faith in Christ and began to walk with Him. For some of you, this is your hour of decision. Will you go forward with Christ or go back to your old life, your old beliefs and unbeliefs? Or, will you by faith continue in the way of Christ?
If you’ll take one step Toward the Savior, my friend, You’ll find His arms open wide. Receive Him, and all of your darkness will end Within your heart He’ll abide. (From song by Ralph Carmichael)
