Once is Enough

On ce is Enough - Radio Broadcast for September 11, 2012

When I was in high school I worked in a bakery. The place wasn't very clean even though I spent considerable time cleaning. Every day was the same, mop and scrub, sanitize and organize. When I left the place was as clean as I could get it and when I returned the next day it looked like donut bombs had exploded. Flour and frosting and sticky gooey messes awaited my mop and broom. I can tell you it was years before I could really enjoy a donut again.

In John 6:58 we read: This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

This is the bread; Jesus is the bread come down from heaven. Compared to the manna God provided in the wilderness, Jesus is the better bread. The manna sustained life; the Bread of Heaven gives life. Jesus holds all things together while at the same time offers life beyond all things.

The bread of this life can at best feed you for a meal or for a day. Eventually you must eat again or you will die. Your daily bread sustains you daily, but you must eat daily or strength will fade and life will end. Just like the bakery that had to be cleaned daily, so you must feed daily to stay alive.

The Bread of Heaven is food indeed. You need only eat of it once to begin life beyond this life. This bread is salvation and that salvation is once and for all completed in Christ for us. Come and eat. When you accept Christ into your heart as your savior you are eating the bread of life. Once is enough, and you will be washed, sanctified and justified beginning your life beyond this life.
