“To Whom Be Glory” (Gal 1)

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (vs3-5)

Glory goes to God for the salvation that’s in Jesus Christ, whom He raised from the dead (vs1-5). We did not earn His graciousness, it came by the freeness and sovereignty of His heart. He gave us eternal life for our sins, gave the Son to die for us, and He did this to give us GRACE and peace forever.

God’s mind towards you who believe is based upon Christ’s work of perfect obedience unto death, and it is based upon the FREE love that sent Him there. Do not think upon the gospel as a means to glorify yourself, for you’ve done nothing worthy of it. Think of this great grace… this gospel that pleases and glorifies God… and know that He’s designed it for His honor and praise. You and I receive the benefits, but the glory is His. We go to heaven, but the praise for bringing us there, the love and devotion, return back up to Him, as we say, “Praise God”, “Thank You”, and “Amen”. We are like the one healed leper who now lives for Christ, preaches the truth, and who refuses to sin for human approval. We now honor the gospel above everything else by preaching the truth of grace and being unwilling to twist the gospel in works religion. God LOSES ALL praise, as soon as we glorify ourselves for our deeds.

Secondly, choose which way you will go (vs6-10). He says, “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”

You cannot please men and God at the same time, and you must make up your mind which way you will go. The gospel is pure grace and any alteration is damnable. This isn’t about being happy or finding what you like, as if God is to be molded by you. We bow to God’s revelation of salvation, and we stick by it! Anyone who changes it, anyone who denies the glory of grace – the Father giving us the Son freely, and the Son giving us all righteousness by faith in His blood – let him be accursed. It is either God’s glory or the sinner’s glory, and God will never shrink His glory for anyone. Therefore, since He saved us, we honor Him, and the gospel of grace, as it is in truth, is the only saving message there is. Do not shut your mouth, and do not give in to man’s hypocrisy. Believe and preach faithfully, give honor to Him who saved you, Him who rules the world, and He will reward you soon. God is EVERYTHING, and His gospel is EVERYTHING to Him.

Finally, glorify God for His goodness in other people (vs11-24)! Paul said, “For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers… And I was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ. But they were hearing only, ‘He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy.’ And they glorified God in me.”

NO ONE is saved because of himself, nor does anyone have one drop of goodness because of human fortitude. Just like salvation is given from above, freely, while we’re sinners, without any regard to any merit in us, even so, all blessings originate with God, and whenever someone is saved, successful, or growing, it is always because God gave it to them freely. We are responsible to be saved, but grace gets the glory for doing all of the conviction, all of the enlightenment, and all of this by the truth sent from God.

If He chose to give you the grace that He gave to someone else, then they’d be you and you’d be just like them. Honor the men whom God saves and uses, but GLORIFY God. We get into preacher worship, parent worship, husband worship, children worship, and we are so prone, like Israel of old, to demand a king, who will be some lesser god who will hurt us (1 Sam 8). Let us wisely thank and praise God for everything, honoring Him above all, and loving the works of His hands.

Blessings are for the taking, and those who receive His favor have been appointed to it before the world began. Have you? Do you receive this grace and glorify God because of it, loving Him and honoring Him for the goodness you continually receive? If so, then you show the grace of God.
