God’s ways with man are consistent for all generations. He saves us by His grace through faith, and shapes us into His image the same way as we live life. That shaping or continuing sanctification process involves the “discipline” of the Lord for all His “sons,” so that we “yield the peaceable fruits of righteousness.” (Hebrews 12) The Bible does not give evidence to suggest that America's believers are any different, and it does suggest that at the end of this church age there may be plenty of "discipline" going around through all kinds of adversity and persecution. I propose to my fellow believers that we may be at the brink of such a time in America.
With that in mind, recall that our Lord speaks of the kingdom of God on earth having "some of every kind, both good and bad," and that at the end of the age it will be sorted out (Matt. 13:47-50). Could it be that He may begin to do some of that sorting (through "discipline") as a result of great adversity raised up against the true citizens of His kingdom in the coming days? The prophet Malachi spoke saying that He is like a "refiner's fire," and "fuller's soap," and that in the Last Days He would "purify the sons of Levi," speaking of natural Israel specifically (Malachi 3:1-4). What about for those sons of His who have accepted Jesus Christ as Messiah, Lord and Savior - those of us who are born again? Could it be that He may also test us? The Bible indicates a great possibility for that.
Down through ages and generations God has permitted various degrees of adversity to come against His people for testing, and strengthening. It would be wise to prayerfully consider that the Kingdom of God on earth may be in for some fiery trials for culling, purging, and purifying before the return of our Lord – very soon! What better way to do so than through persecution from the authorities - something God has permitted for purging many times before.
For the purpose of purging God led His people into the wilderness desert - "to test you, to know what was in your heart" (Deuteronomy 8:1-5). For this reason God raised up a Pharaoh - to send them into the desert; and that as He told Israel then (speaking of Pharaoh), "that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth. As yet you exalt yourself against My people in that you will not let them go" (Exodus 9:16-17). It has happened many times throughout the world during this New Covenant era also, and it is happening at this very moment in places around the world today, only not in America - yet!
We know that Christianity throughout America and much of the free world is in shambles. God has yet to do a purging, purifying work among those who claim His kingdom here. There are 10,000 times more heresies today than during the time of Paul. We are past due the need for purging and purifying.
Something else to consider is the fact that the apostle Paul wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (as are all his writings) that the leadership gifts to the body of Christ would continue edifying the body “till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13). This scripture indicates that we (those who are truly in Christ by grace through faith) will come to a much more mature walk with the Lord than we are walking in today. Again, if that is the case God has some work to do in and among us – and quickly! All believers everywhere acknowledge that our Lord is returning soon! Could adversities and persecutions from America's new "Pharaoh" along with the many others like him throughout our land, serve to be a part of our preparation as the bride of Christ? I propose that there may be a testing sanctification aimed at His people in America in the same way that He has done throughout the history of the church, and that He continues to do in other places around the world today? Not that He is against us, but rather for us; yet He wants to glorify Himself among us. Could this be a preparation for His body so that we become "a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish," at His coming (Ephesians 5:25-27)? While we are technically sanctified through Christ already, His sanctifiying work in and through us on earth continues (I Corinthians 6:11, I Thessalonians 4:4; 5:23)
Is God allowing us to begin to be ruled by Pharaoh types with hard hearts just so God may do with us now what He did with Israel then – take them from Goshen to the Promised Land? Goshen was ideal and comfortable for them and their herds and flocks, but the Promised Land was where God wanted to take them. The only way there was by faith. We are in a type of Goshen where we have been comfortable as Christians, but we are about to enter the "Promised Land," at the return of the Lord for His bride. Could it be that God is about to allow the same kind of testing to come to His people of America, and other nations of the world where Christianity is comfortable?

Things look very dismal right now, but this commentary can be very encouraging if it is God’s glory and grace that we really want the world to see!
