Preaching & Preachers. 40th Anniversary Ed. By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2011.

I don’t think there is any question or debate that Martyn Lloyd-Jones, respectfully referred to as “The Doctor”, was one of the premier expository preachers of all time. A collection of lectures on the topic, Preaching & Preachers, is chock-full of wisdom, instruction, and insight from one who did not merely speak on the subject but lived and believed it!

Two of my favorite quotes are “preaching is theology coming through a man who is on fire” and that the chief end of preaching is “to give men and women a sense of God and His presence.”

This book is encouraging for the preacher on many levels. First, it is a call to return to expository preaching by letting go of the distractions, focusing on the text and the sermon, and not being swayed by other activities that take away from preaching the Word. Even though this is the 40th edition, it was interesting to learn that many of our “distractions” from preaching and from preaching the text are the same today as in his day.

Second, it is refreshing to be reminded of the primacy of preaching, the place of preaching in the life of the church, and God’s call upon the minister to preach the whole counsel of God’s Word faithfully and accurately. It is especially refreshing to be reminded of these things from one who remained faithful to the task for so many years.

Third, reading Lloyd-Jones is funny! He was definitely strongly opinionated and didn’t mind to dogmatically assert his opinions. He was a straight up guy, no holds barred, what you see is what you get. If he doesn’t like it, he abominates it! If he approves of it, you should too! I would’ve loved to meet him and talk with him. Oh well, one day.

Attention all preachers: Get this one and read it.
