Man’s “GPS’ John 16:7-15 (KJV) 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. 15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.
Pilot’s as they fly those huge aircraft through the air are guided by a navigational system called VOR which stands for Variable Omni-Directional Radar. The pilot dials in a frequency on his instrument panel that corresponds to a VOR ground based transmitter along his intended route, the pilot then simply keeps the vertical floating needle on his gauge lined up with the stationary line and he will fly over top of that ground based VOR transmitter. Today we also have navigational aides that help us land based drivers find our way from destination to destination. We type in an address into our Tom-Tom and away we go, the Tom-Tom provides turn by turn guidance to allow us to safely and accurately arrive at our destination. However, way before any of these navigational aides ever existed God had already provided mankind with a Heavenly ‘GPS’ (God Position Sensor) . Look back at verse 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth,… God provided man (Spiritual Man, ie; Man that has been Born-Again) with a built in guidance system (Sensor) to help us along our path of life.
God’s GPS (the Holy Spirit) will guide us in three ways:
1) He will Guide us From Sin: God’s GPS acts differently than our man-made navigational systems, God’s system is designed to help steer us away from that which would hurt or hinder us. God’s GPS will alert us if we are choosing the wrong road to travel on, much like the man-made navigational system a voice will prompt us to make a turn so that we can get back on course. The Holy Spirit (God’s GPS) will in a still small voice alert us to an improper turn in our lives, a turn that if we continue to travel on will result in harm, hurt or hindrance in our relationship with and to God. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to reprove the world of sin, and he will – for the Christian- reprove us of our mis-guided turn so that we can swiftly get back on course. When we feel that pit in the stomach, when that notion strikes the forefront of our mind that we are heading the wrong direction it is merely our Godly GPS trying to alert us to the wrong turn, which we have made and the need to about face and get back on track. God’s GPS will guide us From Sin but also,
2) He will Guide us In Truth: God’s GPS (the Holy Spirit) also has the responsibility to guide us in the truth of God’s Word. John 17:17 states: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. We can go back to John chapter one and see that Jesus is the Word, so the Holy Spirit has the job of revealing Jesus to the world thru the pages of the written word. Today we get all caught up in relying upon fallible man to interpret the Word of God rather than relying upon God’s GPS (the Holy Spirit) to show us the truth. God is infallible and God’s standard is perfection, why then would we rely upon fallible man to give us directions on how to please God? God has given us an internal GPS (the Holy Spirit) to guide us in truth. The truth of the matter is that most of us would not know the prompting of the Holy Spirit (GPS) if he slapped us in the face. The reason we would not recognize the prompting of the Holy Spirit is because we do not even attempt to rely upon God’s GPS to direct our lives. We look to the radio preacher, the written commentaries, our Pastor, our Sunday school teacher instead of the Holy Spirit. Now do not misunderstand me, those other folks may be good and they may be Godly but we should first and foremost be going to the Holy Spirit for guidance, it is why Jesus sent him to us (verse 13 of our text). Rely upon God’s GPS to seek out truth it is his job. So God’s GPS will Keep Us From Sin, and Will Guide us in Truth but he will also:
3) He Will Guide us in Glorifying Jesus: Another big responsibility of the Holy Spirit (God’s GPS) is to bring Glory, Adoration, Worship to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. If we have God’s GPS in us (and we do if we are born again) then it should be real evident by our words and our actions. If we are relying upon our GPS and living according to our GPS guidance then the praise of Jesus, the Adoration of Jesus and the Worship of Jesus should flow without resistance from our lips and our actions, it should be as natural as putting on our shoes. The Holy Spirits duty is to guide everybody’s attention to Jesus, and if the Holy Spirit resides within us then we too should be guiding everybody’s attention to Jesus. This life is not about us it is all about Jesus. The problem seems to be today that we think way too highly of self, we put self at the forefront and give the leftovers to Jesus. We have heaped one worldly thing after another on top of our GPS and it has caused the GPS to lose it’s signal, we need to push the clutter aside, dust off the GPS and begin to follow the guidance once again so that we can be obedient bringing glory to Jesus.
God’s GPS (the Holy Spirit) will guide us From Sin, Guide us in Truth and will Guide us in Glorifying Jesus but only if we have the God Position Sensor activated in our lives and are following it full heartedly. You cannot have God’s GPS unless you have confessed to God that you are a sinner, that you are willing to turn from your sin, and that you want God to forgive you of your sin, then and only then can you have God’s GPS- HeyMen! And God Bless.
