CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune: “Immortal, Invisible”)

Words by Gary Shepard

We gather this morning to worship and praise,

The God of all glory, the Ancient of Days.

None other is worthy but Jesus alone

God’s Lamb once provided, His blood has atoned.

From sin and from darkness, He brings out His own

Through preaching the gospel to them He makes known,

The riches of glory and grace by His cross:

Eternal possessions which cannot be lost.

Praise be to the Father who chose us in grace.

Praise be to the Son who has died in our place.

Praise be to the Spirit who gave us new birth.

Praise be to the One God of heaven and earth.

With all of our hearts does the Lord bid us sing

Come humbly before Him , thanksgiving to bring.

All others are idols, He lives, God alone

By grace He has saved us and made us His own.

THE POWER OF THE CROSS

The death of the Lord Jesus Christ upon the cross was not an effort to save all men without exception, but the accomplishment of the redemption of those given to Him in covenant grace before the world began. "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for it" (Ephesians 5:25). The substitutionary sacrifice of the Savior did not merely render salvation possible; His death was an offering that "saved His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). His work of redemption really redeemed: "...having obtained eternal redemption for us" (Hebrews 9:12). His death was a reconciliation that actually reconciled. "We were reconciled to God by the death of His Son" (Romans 5:10). His sacrifice was an offering which "perfected forever them that are sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14).

It is a commonly held belief that the everlasting salvation of sinners hinges upon their willingness to accept what Jesus Christ did for them upon the cross. My friend, the cross-death of the Son of God is not up for the acceptance or rejection of men. His blood was offered to the Lord as the full payment price required for the liberation of His people from the claims of divine justice due to their sinfulness. The resurrection of Christ is testimony that God accepted our Savior and His sacrifice for sin. Yes, His people will be brought to turn from their idols and believe Christ, but faith does not make the death of the Savior effectual, it does not put away sin, it does not make sinners acceptable to God nor does it not bring in everlasting righteousness. Actually, it is the exact opposite. Faith in the blessed Savior is the result of His redemptive work; it is the effect of His removal of sin; it is the consequence of righteousness having been brought in. Belief on Christ flows out of the power of the cross.

COMPLETE IN CHRIST

Colossians 2:9 – For in HIM (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. {10} And ye are complete in HIM, which is the head of all principality and power.

What a great and glorious message this is! All the fullness of the Godhead dwells in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, and all who are united to Him are complete in HIM! Christ is the fullness of all the wisdom, righteousness, sanctification (holiness), and redemption, God requires. And this is true of all who believe in Him, all who rest in the blessed fact that His righteousness alone entitles them to the whole inheritance of eternal life and final glory in Heaven. If all who believe in Him are complete in Him, and it is all based on the merits of His righteousness alone, then there is nothing left for believers to do in order to attain salvation. They have it completely, and it will never be lost. T here is nothing for believers to do in order to be qualified, fit, or entitled to any part of eternal life. Christ has done it all for them, and they are complete and secure in Him. Is He qualified and able to attain and maintain all of this for them? Well, in His Person dwells all the fulness of the Godhead, and His righteousness satisfied God's law and justice for His sheep. His righteousness alone demands their whole salvation, from the new birth to final glorification.

In light of this glorious message, you would think that the whole world would believe it. You would think multitudes would come to hear this message. You would think that the churches where this message is preached would overflow with people. This is the only message by which God saves sinners. But the sad fact is this – Men and women by nature will always choose their own self-righteous efforts over the righteousness of Christ. Why? It is because of self-righteousness, self-love, and religious pride. Man by nature will not see himself as complete based on the righteousness of another. He by nature will insist on his own efforts at religion and morality as contributing to his completeness. This is the height of total depravity, human pride, unbelief, and idolatry. So the command of the Gospel is for self-righteous sinners to believe God's gospel proclaiming how all of salvation is based on the righteousness of Christ, and to repent of such dead works and idolatry. God promises to save and to make complete all who come to Him pleading the merits of His Son.

--- Bill Parker
