Book Recommendation for Pastors

The Work of the Pastor. By William Still. Scotland: Christian Focus Publications. Second Reprint, 2010.

Having served as pastor for over 50 years at the same location, William Still, was known first as an excellent advocate and practitioner of expositional preaching. He had such an influence upon fellow ministers that he became known as a pastor of pastors. His book, The Work of the Pastor, is an excellent reminder of keeping the right things in priority and implementing an effective ministry, all keeping with and rooted in the exposition of Scripture.

Ch 1 “Feed my Sheep” is a call to expositional preaching of the whole counsel of Scripture. Don’t starve the sheep!

Ch 2 “The Pastor Outside the Pulpit” is a call to utilize counseling situations as another avenue of teaching the Word.

Ch 3 “Complete and Contemporary” is a caution to preach to your own audience in your own context. Apply the Scripture properly.

Ch 4 “Commissioned by God” is a stirring call to remember to whom we will give an account!

Ch 5 “Walking the Tightrope” sets forth the challenge to maintain a balance in ministry between study and relational ministry.

The Work is a great encouragement, challenge, and reminder for all pastors. Even though Still cautions us to not spend all of our time reading books, this is one that would be profitable to read during your “study” time.

Furthermore, Still was mentor to Sinclair Ferguson and he highly recommends this book. What more convincing do you need?
