History: Oral Roberts' Comic Books

I found that a curious and fascinating piece of history had been digitized: Two comic books from 1956-57 entitled "Oral Roberts' True Stories" numbers 102 and 106. These were published by Healing Waters, Inc in Tulsa, and seem to be self-published by Oral Roberts' ministry. Each issue features stories introduced by Oral Roberts, who insists these stories are true. In 102, a blind man goes to an Oral Roberts meeting and is healed. The issues end with a gospel invitation.

Like most 1950s comics, the drawings are crude, and the creators are uncredited. We'll never know who produced these comics.

These issues say they're produced quarterly. To get up to #106, that would be over 25 years of quarterly issues. My guess is that this was published monthly for a time, and then switched to quarterly.

My thanks to the scanners who have rescued this important piece of the history of American Christianity from oblivion and made it available in the digital age!

The link below this blog post will take you to a zip file with both issues. (You'll either need to find a digital comic book reader, or unpack the archives and view the images of each page separately.)

EDIT: Jan 2013 - added new link, because old one was dead; this new zip file has more issues.
