Feeding tube was inserted on 2/4/12 to give him a little bit of breastmilk. The stuffed toys came from some friends (Dickersons) at FFPC.
He's finally here!
What a huge relief! Martin was finally born at 11:08am on Friday, Feb 3, 2012 in Charleston, SC. He came weighing right at 7lbs which is the largest of any of our children. This is particularly good news because having the extra weight will help him through the surgeries. It was a really tough, induced labor but Jamie and Martin are doing great! As soon as Martin was born, he was whisked away to get "wired up" with monitoring gear by the pediatric cardiology team. We got a chance to take some pictures.
He is born with HLHS(hypoplastic left heart syndrome) which is a congenital heart defect where the left half of the heart is severely underdeveloped. He will require multiple open-heart surgeries for survival. He will be undergoing an echocardiogram shortly to get a more exact picture of his heart's condition and so the surgeon's will know which course of action to take (they have some options).
He is stable and he is a cute little baby. He seems perfectly normal and healthy. You wouldn't know anything was wrong with him at all. It's amazing. His first surgery should take place within a few days and he will not be able to eat until after his surgery. How thankful we are that the delivery went smoothly and that Martin looks healthy!
Thank you for your prayers. We are so relieved and grateful!
Update 2/4/12 9:30am: Martin was moved to the PCICU (pediatric cardiac intensive care unit) last night where all "heart babies" are kept. When he was first born, they had him in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) because of a bed shortage in the PCICU. This was actually a special blessing for Jamie because she had the opportunity to hold Martin for a whole hour (the rules in the PCICU do not allow for holding). Martin looks remarkably healthy. His color looks very good and he is breathing normally and not needing breathing tubes (some HLHS babies require breathing tubes before surgery). He is about as strong and healthy going into this surgery as is humanly possible. Just what we had been praying for. The Lord is very merciful. Jamie has recovered very rapidly from labor and will probably be discharged soon. Oh, and another unexpected blessing -- he was born on Feb 3 which is (unofficially) Congenital Heart Disease Day with February being Heart Awareness Month. How about that.
Update 2/4/12 10:20pm: Martin is still on prostaglandin to keep the valve in his heart open. His oxygen levels have been higher than they would like, and his little heart is having to work hard, but he is hanging in there and doing as well as can be expected. They are talking about doing the surgery on Tuesday. Thank you for praying!
